Coker black walls seem to be the worst culprit. It’s a right PIA. Happens far too quickly ,Simplegreen seems the most gentle solution. Putting some sort of tyre black on in my mind the brown is still lurking beneath . Spray simple green on keep it wet for a minute or so and hose off. No street rod alloy rims in this house though, painted solids or powder coated wires.

I had cleaned my tires before we drove to Cherokee, North Carolina and back, it didn't rain so there was really no road grime but the tires looked just as bad as they did before i cleaned them.

Yesterday I was talking to a friend that had retired from Michelin and he suggested wiping the tires down with Naphtha, which is a flammable hydrocarbon mixture used primarily as a solvent, he said the use of carbon black is the reason the tires turn brown, HRP

Personal experience. Wanted to clean a set of polished valve covers. I let the simple green sit on the valve covers for a while. Completely discolored them. I suppose if you wipe the Simple Green or Purple Power off immediately it won't harm it. I won't chance it again

  5. Trick I was told in high school was to clean with kerosene or white naptha (camping fuel). Leaves tires with a satin finish. Not as harsh as lacquer thinner. I only use this on black sidewalls and does not build up like tire dressings.

Back to the Purple Power or Simple Green deal. I just checked the label on my jug of PP. Says not for wheel rims... especially aluminum. I think it contains a caustic? The VCs I ruined were with Simple Green. I don't have a bottle of SG to check, but I suspect it contains the same caustic.

  7. Well......I do have the Simple Green container......it says it's safe for aluminum. I guess there are exceptions to all "rules", and your experience seems to be one.........like I noted above, it has never affected my polished aluminum stuff........The wheels on my '35 pick-up are polished Americans and look new even though they are 60 years old and never coated.......I use Simple Green to clean them and the tires every time I wash the truck.

  8. My wife turned me on to these Mr. Clean scrub things. They are soft sponge with soap on one side and seem to fall apart after one maybe two tires. They do a good job of removing the brown stuff and don't affect polished rims.

  9. Danny I used to use *Formula 409 on the 'Stones on my bike. Those old bias plys were bad to turn brown. My late shovel came with radio tires stock. I have not yet had that problem with them. Odd when you think about it.

*409 cause the world is not ready for 410. :D

That would be the Mr Clean erasers, I've never tried them on tires but they work great on white vinyl interior's. HRP

A 410 would only shot holes in that line of thinking! :D HRP

What you do NOT want to use on aluminum is any citrus based cleaner/decreaser. It is acidic and will turn aluminum wheels "frosty" looking, especially anodized wheels. It will really screw up anodized wheels.

I used purple power on my tires every time I was the car, I haven't noticed my tires changing color.
