If you can, copy it, and write copy right across it. Not real sure if sending a copy can do much harm, even if you both produce a title to the law, yours is in the system and his would not be... might let some more chime in too

I would tell him that for x number of dollars he can have the original and keep it.

if you send him copy, he has your address and some info, tell him ,come look at it, lets talk money, then we will get the title out.

  6. Doesn't sound like he is interested in the car at all, just your paperwork. My guess is you'll never see your title again. I can't think of any honest reason he would need it.

as mentioned, write copy across the face of the copy.

but this is an unreasonable request, unless they need it for financing purposes.

No copy of title should be sent. Probably has his own coupe but no title. Would use the Vin number to title his own vehicle, which could cause you problems later

Have him call you and explain why he needs it, if he does not call don't send anything.

Couldn't you just take a picture of it, block out the VIN number and email the copy to him. I've done that before to show documentation that the car is titled in my name.

I've had guys want to visually verify that titles were clean and ready to go.
I put a piece of paper over the vin number copy it and send them that.
That way there's no funny business

Block name, address and other personal info.He may want to see that its not a salvage title. Nothing he can do with the vin on the title, you own and have possesion of the vehicle. He is just doing his homework

I'd be leary of sending make, model, and VIN to anyone. Does he want your car? If not I would ignore him.

  15. He can't do anything with a "copy" of the title.

    HOWEVER....

As mentioned that person (if he really is in NY but might even be in Bangcock for all you know) will have all the info that is on that title including the VIN number. There are title services out there that will issue a "good" title just off of a VIN number.

    DON'T FUCKIN' DO IT!

There isn't ANY reason why anyone would need a copy of a title on an "old" car. What are they going to do with it run a fuckin' CARFAX! Yea right!

There's a reason why it's called Evil Bay!

Doesn't anyone watch 60 Minutes, CNN, the local news? NEVER give out your info to anyone you don't know or trust. There's new scams coming out everyday. Just because someone on here hasn't been scammed yet, does not make them an expert on what is or isn't safe.

Sad world we're living in, but it's the only one we have.

Block out enough of the vin so that it couldn't be used and your street address unless he already knows it. Then mark the copy COPY only NOT TRANSFERABLE.
But that is only if he gives you a legit answer. He may be honest and only want to see that you actually have a clear title in your possession for the car. More than one of us has either paid for and received a car or driven a lot of miles after one only to discover that all the sudden that the seller can't find the title or that the title is screwed up.

I would never buy a car without seeing a clear title first. I have requested to see the title and have been requested to show the title prior to a purchase or a sale. In this day of fraud many want to see the title is free and clear of liens. it covers the car for sale and is being sold by the real owner. If you are going to sell something on ebay to someone across the country you need to be prepared to produce proof.
I recently sold a high dollar car. The owner wanted to see the title. I spoke with him on the phone, googled his name and his email, when all checked out I emailed him a copy. He bought the car off ebay without inspection. I had his money 4 weeks before he was able to schedule shipping

As stated before Perhaps he is just doing his homework. I personally know someone who bought a vintage "ratty" hotrod on E-bay that sent the money then all correspondence stopped, he was out thousands. I don't think that it is unreasonable to ask for verification of documentation ONLY if you blank out the VIN# and your last name & address as well. This way if he is serious he'll understand that its legitimate and if he's up to no good he's gaining nothing.

  20. There are plenty of "snow birds" from NY that go to Florida for the winter. Have him find one of them to come to you to verify the title's exsistance. I have done this in the past.

I am with Mr48chev and some of the others. Anytime I am looking at a car one of the first questions I ask is about the title. It is just too messy anymore to buy something without one or with one that is screwed up. If his reasoning is sounding legit I see no harm in blocking out key pieces of info on the copy, marking it in red COPY, NON-TRANSFERABLE, and sending it to him.
The last car I bought from several states away I asked for photo's of the VIN on the car and a copy of the title and got both without any hassle from the seller because I explained why I wanted them. Anymore I think most people are pretty cool about working with buyers who are afraid of getting scammed as long as there is good communication up front.
Bottom line is this: If you arent comfortable doing something then dont do it. If the guy sounds hokey follow your instincts and tell him no, and why you wont. His reaction to that may tell you a lot about his motives.

I actually once took out a loan to buy a '31 Model A. One of the requirements was a copy of the title. However, it wasn't a problem since I had put a down payment of $6K and it was a local transaction.
