  1. I'm in the process of selling a car (pre '65) to a guy in San Jose.
Alberta does not have titles, we sell vehicles off a bill of sale. I'm planning on giving him a bill of sale and my current registration for the car. Will that suffice to allow him to get a title in California?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Thanks.
Are there waivers for Smog testing etc. for vintage vehicles?
The car is a '58 Impala.

Last I knew, smog testing was 75 and newer. 58 didn't even require a PCV, so there is nothing to inspect and there were no standards for cars before 65-66.
From the site I posted (bold added)
"Evidence that the vehicle meets Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California emissions standards.
    • This includes an EPA and California emissions label attached to the vehicle.
    • A smog certificate.
    • This applies to gasoline vehicles manufactured after 1968.
    • This also applies to diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after 1980."
I was a smog tech in CA from 81 to 97, but moved out of state in 08. There have been many changes, but they are for the cars that had emissions equipment installed.

I got the F@#k out of that.
It was a living, but the customers felt you were stupid but just smart enough to cheat them, the BAR was a pain, and when that 150K worn out POS that failed was worth roughly the waiver limit, it was not fun.

Went to a company that wrote repair manuals. They said it was easier to train mechanics to write than to train writers how cars worked. Did that for many years too.

I included the bio so the OP could take the opinion with the right amount of skepticism. Also included the link 'from the horse's mouth' so any questions could be answered by searching there.

    From the California DMV -

How to register a car in California from out of state without Title?

You will need to turn in the latest original vehicle registration card, or registration renewal notice from out of state. You will get a California vehicle registration card, but no California certificate of title. 2- An Application for title or registration form. CA DMV form REG 343.

Fellas - as with previous Title questions the standard HAMB answer is contact the state you are selling it to get the answer.
