I missed the show, no cable and all. But watching that clip, I think that car is way cooler than the Shelby Series 1 car. Think about it like this. If they had continued to produce Cobra's, and they updated them every 3-5 years like all cars, this years model would probably look alot like the one they designed. If Chevy has quit making Corvettes in 1968, then some designer brought out a concept car that looked like the C5, it would never be looked at as a "real" corvette, but because of it's continuous production it is. Same as the new beetle, and new thunderbird. Modern cars with some styling ques from the origional. My .02 -Bugman Jeff
[ QUOTE ] The silver (Chrome?) one is definitely the best looking car that was on the show. [/ QUOTE ] Polished Aluminum. The 427 Cobra bodies were all hand shaped Aluminum. I would have been impressed if they had done the new Cobra in bare Aluminum. Much faster, and cheaper,to do make the body in Fiberglas and Carbonfiber. And judging from the molds they made, they don't plan on making many more. They did do a good job styling the the newest Mustang. Without seening them side by side, aside from the tires, I would have trouble telling the difference between the new GT40 and the old.. I think there are too many conterporary influences in the new Cobra, it looked better with the heaedlights removed, and the lower corners of the grill opening didn't work visually, the tail lights were painfully high tech. The front looked too much like the new Nissan sportscar, whatever it's called. The dash was horrible, the only way to make it worse would be to use digital gauges. And I could not believe they used a cheap sticker to put the Shelby name on the side. But the show was decent, even if the car was ugly.
Is it just me? When you put round headlights (or tailights) in a car, shouldn't the hole they go into be round?
I thought the same thing about the headlights, why not use a style like that of the new beetle, or mercedes? Just my 2 cents - Joe
Looks like thumbs up for the most part from you critichal HAMBers I liked it. The gearhead that I am, that exhaust note was good for my soul...and yes, seeing ol' Shelby doing donuts was fun, and as noted by several of you guys: no YELLING!!
I enjoyed the show, although I didn't really like the end product. It was a welcome change in programming for me 'cause I had been on the couch for 2 days only to get up every 10 minutes to puke or*****. It would be cool to have a job like that building weird stuff for the factory. I sat trying to pick out the styling "cues" as well. Unfortunately, all the new cars look the same to me. Homagenized egg shapes with only "styling cues" and name badges to tell them apart. I look forward to the next one with Troy. It will be neat to see an Illinois boy done Good. For those that like to******, it was better than most of the other***** out there, go back to watching your "head of the class" reruns and beating your meat.
Are you kidding??? That car looks amazing!! I love it. Actually, the morning before the show even aired, I sent a picture of that new cobra to my wife and both of us gave it a big "WOW!" Then they "reveal" what the new car is on TLC. It was great! Definately a show that kept my interest through out the entire build. Do you think you could re-program a car's ECU when the computer program is written in Japanese?!?!?! Carol doing doughnuts was awesome! I agree with the statement that the build team must have been*****ting their pants when he hammered it!
Engineers build stuff. With the possible exception of a few geniuses, they also bring their strengths to the team. Some are idea guys, some are good with their hands, some work out details, and others specialize in refining systems designed by others. All are problem solvers. The show let us see some of that. By the way, from my experience, it sounds not too much different than the way most hot rods get put together.
two things- that exhaust note at a quick idle sounds like tympani, which is cool, and second, that even in this day and age clay is still used for styling excercises. neat! overall the car had an uncomfortable modular/Power-Ranger-y look to it, kinda....embalmed. there's no argument here that it goes and sounds like a bat outta Hell, though. plus, I'm with the opinion stated above that the GT40 is full-on snappy, but Disastron's right in his finding a bit of Muntz Jet in the Cobra. on the other hand, didn't the Muntz Jet begin life as a vehicle with some blue blood in there somewhere...?
I swear, even if the show was hosted by your guys own mothers, you would still hate it. even if it was the only car related show on TV, ever. I liked it alot, it had me looking at the clock at every commercial break, waiting for more. Im excited to see the next one.
Kind of OT but a pretty funny Caroll Shelby story: I was at an upscale restuarant in the Los Angeles area at a business meeting. We pay the bill and walk out to get my car from valet. There is a 60's Aston Martin DB4 in front of the restaurant parked so everyone can see it. A group of guys is gathered around the car and look to be talking to the owner. Obviously a celebrity or someone with serious cash. Caroll Shelby himself walks out to the valet for his car and my coworker recognizes him and points him out. He walks past the group of guys and takes a look at the DB4 closer up. Upon further inspection looks at the group and asks "Which of you fellas own this boat anchor?" The shock on the guys face was priceless, and Shelby got a real kick out of it. My car pulled up and I was dying of laughter the entire drive back to work. What a character that guy is... -Dane
I liked it. No throwing wrenches, no******ing, just a story about a car. Period. I'll be watching next week. (unless they bring Boyd in to slam a few doors)
I saw the show and I can only hope that it was C.S. that was doing the donuts in the new Cobra. It definetly was him in his car, but I'm not so sure that the engineers would be that confident letting an 81 year old, (even though he IS C.S.) drive their car. Cool to see him though. Next weeks show looks better than the 1st.
If you were one of the top Ford engineers building a car that you hope emulates Carol Shelby's classic cobra, as well as gets his stamp of approval, would you tell him he can't do donuts? um...no.
I've always been in love with Cobras for as long as I can remember. A real one is my dream car. Not a kit, a real one. Probably not gonna happen. However, I liked their 2004-5 version. Probably won't be able to afford the new one either. But how fun would it be to work on a project like that? I liked the show.
I kind of liked the show it was more interesting than most of the stuff that was on. I used to watch the speed channel but is all a bunch of*****ty**** nascar***** and formula 1 racing. What ever happened to drag racing? Thats the whole reason I got the damn channel. Through the whole show I was wondering how many of those guys that were on the tv were just there because the camera was there? How many I wonder were the real workers and builders. Instead of just talking heads. I have several in the company I work for now that are just******s who brown nosed enough to get in the******************** for the main boss. One thing I do miss about the mechanic bizz I didn't have******s like this giving me***** when they don't do anything themselfs but*********.

I slept through the show, worked too hard I guess...
[ QUOTE ] How many I wonder were the real workers and builders. [/ QUOTE ] Oh,you mean the guys working 14+ hours a day,7 days a week,to meet some stupid deadline.
All these years and Carroll still seems pissed that the Chevy guys wouldn't give him a small block...pretty funny...
Thought it started out kinda lame and they can loose the*****py soundtrack anytime. But, seeing CSX2000 moving under its own power, and Shelby doing donuts in "Daisy": Priceless!
