Just got my 38 chevy coupe out of the paint shop. I plan on putting the bumpers back on and am fishing for some suggestions. Should I get them rechromed or paint them/what color. I left them off when I painted it chrome yellow 6 years ago but I'm thinking about using them now.
I think painted bumpers would look a little too street roddy. Chrome is the right accent for all that painted area, and is the traditional way, too. vic
chrome them...or leave them off and make up a set of nerf bars. painted bumpers are like the big hair bands of the 80's. nothing says duran duran better than some painted bumpers....ewwwwwww !

My 40 chevy coupe will have plated bumpers because painted ones are too 80's for me. Same story for my grille and headlight rings. I like 37-38 chevys with simple chrome T-bars too..
100% for chrome... I'll be so chrome poor when I get to that stage on the merc,but I'd paint mine Krylon silver before I'd paint them body color... Chrome is ALWAYS the answer...

there is not an old car anywhere which would look better with painted bumpers instead of chrome. if there is I want to see the pics
No one's mentioned powder coating. I had my bumpers done in Bingle (the pcoat manufacturer) silver because I can't afford chrome right now. Pretty shiney and tough! I dropped one about four feet to a concrete drive (t. rex arms and hands, ya know), it bounced, and I expected some serious scratches. I had picked them the day before from the shop. Didn't chip OR scratch. Cost for two bumpers including media blast and tax? $250. Wait time? One week. So give me hell, but I think it looks pretty good. "Officer, I didn't know that driving without seats was against the law..."
Chrome it is, too! But check the price of new ones before you plate the ones you have. You may save some money and have a pair of bumpers to sell and reduce your total cost.
Photos, please. I have seen "chrome" powdercoat, and while it does not look like chrome, if done properly, it DOES look like polished aluminum. It might be appropriate for some parts, and it is dirt cheap in comparison to chrome. Having said that, bumpers need to be chrome on a custom. No question about it. Spend the money where it counts.
