  2. Hey f&j different strokes for different folks, if we all did it the same way this great past time of ours would suck. I wanna be an individual just like every one else.
I think it all depends on the car and what the owner expects out of it, I owned a 53 Chrysler that to me drive great in stock form and I left it just like that, only fixed and rebuilt what was required to keep her safe.
Had a 50 Chevy that to me drive like shit in stock form, so I clipped it with a jag front , open rear drive yadda yadda

To me it’s all about doing a quality job, build it for yourself. Look at this build for example, I really like all the improvements Vicky is doing this thing is going to drive great.
I also love the wooden speedster in the “A model A speedster kind of thing “ these 2 vehicles side by side are no where near the same thing but I would drive the wheels of of both of them. As much as this truck is not traditional the work done, and the work being done can all translate into anything we do, DONT DO SHIT WORK, DONT PAY FOR SHIT WORK, and IF YOU DO HERE IS HOW YOU FIX IT PROPERLY!!

  4. Thanks man,
What's amazing is how the misguided imagination and pure conjecture based solely on ones personal and private filters can litter up and just fuck up a thread with judgments.

There's a crossmember - one that I designed and fabricated on my bench,
control arms that I designed and fabricated on my bench, AMC style spindles that were slightly modified right here, aluminum Hubs that were modified right here, a brake mounting bracket that I designed and fabricated.
Out of the box Chrysler ball joints, tie rods, bearings, seals and a thunderbird steering rack, ls1 Camaro brakes and Aldan coil overs.

Who wants to label that one?
Surely ain't no 1800 hotrod kit or M2 stuff at all, it's not a frame swap, it's not a clip install either. Still OT? Idk but it's still about un fucking a horrendous fuck up and I can't wait to drive it.

  7. Quicker, yes and no
    Less money , no

My Original suggestion was to just get a new chassis but that's a
big bill, big nut and all at once just to get it dropped off.
Then it needs paint and assembly and fitting right

He wants me to do it and keep the money in house instead of writing a check for a chassis

We're shooting for a test drive early next week.
Then blow it apart again for chassis paint.

Wow, what a s**t load of work, just fixing some else´s screw ups. You are doing a heck of a good job. Too bad your costumer didn´t get to know you earlier , he´d have saved a lot of change and would have been driving this truck instead of taking from one shop to another. But at least there is a happy end in sight!

I'm new to rodding and this forum, but I just assumed people knew what they were doing. Being an engineer, I'm a little different, but I'm amazed at some of these threads and the stuff folks have literally slapped together. It seems though, I'm always fixing someone else's mistakes, whether it be at work, around the house, or on my cars.

  20. Almost would have been better off selling the truck off and making it someone else problem and having you build one from scratch.

Easier in the long run for sure, and I would stand a bet to say cheaper as well. Seems it always takes more time to fix mistakes then do it right the first time.

I know I loose my damn coffee all the time,,,,but
Since post 199 wasn't originally yours,,,I thought it might have been lost for good.:)

There was a bunch of very valuable information that would really bust your noggin wide open that is not easy to come by sprinkled within. There's still some good stuff though. Might do a book one day.

  25. So a we got the truck together and test drove it pretty hard. D7BE6069-C5D5-4445-9EDE-4F55277C81E7.jpeg Fixed a few bugs and drove it a bit more. Managed to gouge up the passenger fender and running board pretty good too. Armed With a punch list of a few items we needed to tweak ,,,,

Then tore it all back apart for paint on the chassis, firewall and the fender. Frame went out for blasting and got some filler for the scars. I was hit with some budget cuts so we worked within them. I basically did top notch on everything that would be hard to do and I’m the areas of new work. Cut hard on other things instead of cutting everywhere and trying butter the whole loaf with less. It shows exactly where Things that got cut were expensive finishing touches that could easily be done later,,, ceramic coating exhaust, trans pan, painting the gas tank, new bolts, detail rear end, polished valve covers, that kind of stuff.
The other night waiting for paint to dry, we counted the modifications and pieces fabricated, machined and all the things we did to this damn truck,,, I’m sure that we missed a few but it’s 800 line items.

Wow! I wondered whatever happened to this one. What's amazing to me is that it was a pretty complete truck and to get it right, you basically rebuilt it from the ground up.

800 modifications! How does that translate into hours? I don't even want to know the dollars involved. I'm sure the owner got a bargain whatever the cost. Too bad he had to pay you to fix it when he paid someone else to build it right the first time and they didn't.

    Looks real good, now.

So after moving the decimal over a multiplying by Pi, subtracting what wasn't done, adding paint and body, / your year in to day's. What is the sum?

  28. Way more than anyone wanted ^^^

    and yet nobody is happy

I refuse to cut corners or do shit half assed - I just flat out won’t do it, but I’m ok with NOT doing something. The whole last phase of this job has been “DO NOT TOUCH IT” or “no touchie “

Too many conversations like this - How much more, I need to know what it’s going to take to finish my truck? Me - “ I understand, I want to know that too however neither one of us can know what else needs fixed there’s absolutely no way to determine that. Everything and I mean everything is fucked up”

Not part of the chassis work at all, and a great way to loose a week off deadline calendar and eat 60 hrs. Plus paint work. Every part of the doors mechanisms were wrong. Beautiful door panels on with non replacing Christmas tree clips need to come off - guess what?
Painted and buffed door jambs painted bolts and the top hinges wobble around like a hot dog down a hall way. Guess what?
Windows that need 2 hands to roll down, stripped out sheet metal screw holes, vent window assembly moves around, bent up fuzzys - guess what?
Door latch locating holes ripped out and welded up wrong, painted and buffed but now cut and rewelded, guess what?
Door strikers missing the serrated locating plates, on the painted and buffed jambs, guess what? Thanks @squirrel !
Interior Handles that work till the custom door panel goes on, a few thousand brain cells later the handle mechanism is redesigned,,, not sure why Chevy didn’t do it this way in the first place.
They must have been running out of weather strip glue because that all fell off and there’s no way to get to it without removing the doors,,, again!

Now the doors work great, close and latch correctly inside and out, windows go up and down all without chewing the weather stripping.
Soon it will eat more time painting the door jambs and doors, the interior guy is gonna have to figure out something with those Christmas tree clips, I no touchie!

The vintage air system was installed by others and without the heater control valve, “awe that’s not needed” I ain’t touching it ,,, because!!! The engine cooling fan relay is in the wheel well, I ain’t touching it,,, because!!! The steering column mount is in a fight with the carpet, no touchie. The panel bond glue they used in the bed is coming loose,, no touchie. The bed support rails they used don’t match the wood, no touchie drill new holes,, the rear bed rail was installed incorrectly and bowed the back,,no touchie.

It’s been a fight,, one of a hundred stories.
