Man look how weighted down the car is in the back in some of those photos! Given the landscape photos and the car in question it’s hard to not think they were scouting locations or running a little test and tune where no one would see them. great set of photos!
I've been researching the hell out of these pictures trying to get some context. Really, there are only two clues within: 1. The images were labeled, "Mexico trip" 2. This image that includes signage: What’s wild about this shot is that the signs suggest it’s not Mexico at all. In fact, they pin it about 25 miles south of Barstow—right in the heart of Bat Country. These days, that same stretch of nowhere is home to a pretty major NASA installation. I’m guessing they snapped this on the way to or from the border, but who the hell knows? One thing’s for sure, though—looks an awful lot like two guys scouting wide-open spaces to haul ass in.
Maybe they are racing in “Mexico” a tradition that continues today. this seems like the perfect situation for one of those Google satellite guys on social media/ YouTube. They use a land mark such as the mountain range and zeroing exactly where the photo was taken from. It’s a niche skill set for sure but it is fun to watch
Google maps/ street view has what I’m guessing is a 360 deg drone shot of that valley if you search Laguna Salada, Mexico. it looks VERY much like that and would make since with the sign post.
Thank You Ryan. Will be anxious to see what other materials you scored. The scenery of natural desolation, spiked with our favorite coupe is a sensory stimula. I've had the priviledge of standing on ground where nothing, and no one else is evident. The feeling is awesome. Thanks
If all of this stash involves Tom Cobb, hopefully we will get some shots from when he owned the Pierson Brothers coupe.
Bud Fox traveled with Tom a lot and Clyde Sturdy. Clyde Sturdy is Associated Gear co. Gotta have gears to reach those amazing speeds
Tattooed Buddy Fox, 2nd from the right, next to Alex Xydias. Doesn't look like the guy in these photos.
One of the many dry lake beds in the Mojave desert. It's north of Barstow and west of Goldstone. We spent a lot of time camping in that area in the 60s. It's about 185 miles north of the US/Mexico border. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Goldstone,+CA/@35.241782,-117.0617775,24640m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m15!1m8!3m7!1s0x80c410ddfd437afb:0x92064c8773db613!2sGoldstone,+CA!3b1!8m2!3d35.2971937!4d-116.9139253!16s/m/048p7sc!3m5!1s0x80c410ddfd437afb:0x92064c8773db613!8m2!3d35.2971937!4d-116.9139253!16s/m/048p7sc?authuser=0&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIxMi4wIKXMDSoJLDEwMjExNDUzSAFQAw==
Maybe they were scouting for another lake bed to run on. They actually had an scta event on Laguna Salada in the 60s or early 70s. Al Teaque would know he ran down there with George Benson in the 29. The locals came out to watch and they had issues with keeping them off the course. They never went back.
If you go back into the 1941 Throttle archives they were hitting all the dry lakes trying to run. The early races attracted such rowdy crowds owners didn't want to share their dirt. There were several Timing Assns and they had their preferred lake.
