You have mentioned the two different leak down test but did not rear or missed where the leak was going.

Correct. I apologize I failed to mention when we got the car home I drove it 10 miles and started smelling some burnt oil so I pulled over and opened the hood only to find oil all over the passenger side of the engine coming out of the breather..

Engine is torn down. Block still has a good bore and will only need a hone. #6 piston had a crack in the skirt and had a lot of nicks and impact marks. Looks like something was floating around in there for awhile. Did not bend any valves thankfully. Found something else interesting inside as well.. Cast crank. Did not expect that. Mains look perfect but the rod bearings were toast.

  4. At least you know what you have now. I would still tear down the heads, look at the valves for run out and at least freshen them up. You have a real mixed bag there, always good to go back to square-one and do it right.

  5. You should post some pics of the progress for those interested.

Exactly.. I am going to have everything 100% freshened up. I am also going to put in a forged crank and get rid of the cast one. I have heard cast cranks will eat up rod bearings with an improper tune and poor fuel as well. I really wish I knew how much damage was done before I got it.

Glad to read there was a happier ending than I feared...detonation is devastating.

I would be very concerned about the valves in the affected cylinder. Might be part of the leakdown loss if a valve got hit by whatever was rattling around inside that chamber. Just a slight tweak could have caused a valve to not fully seat, so I'd probably put new in those valves, even if they look good. Do a leak down test on the combustion chambers before pulling the heads apart.

I agree, I was expecting the worst. Even pulled out the 429 thunder jet out of the corner of the garage just in case I needed a donor. The machine shop said they will put new valves in the #6 hole and will CC the heads to determine the correct piston to achieve the right comp ratio.

Here is the #6 piston. Bad picture but you can make out all of the nicks and gouges.
