This weeks project was a gas filler tube for my 31 Model A coupe. I considered putting the filler in the trunk with the gas tank but discarded that idea due to fumes, drips, and access. I also considered flaps, doors, and several styles of motor cycle fillers. I finally decided to take some cues from tradition and build my own. I started with a donated aluminum cap and threaded stainless steel fill tube cut off a custom tank. One of those things a friend had laying around. The remnant bin provided a short length of tubing and a 5" square bit of 3/16" plate. All stainless. The plate was bent to fit the body location by hand. I used a large arbor press. The center hole was cut with a hole saw mounted in the mill. 90 rpm and lots of lubricant. The outside edge was cut to the line on a Burr King belt sander. Holes were laid out with a pair of dividers and drilled from the back side. I used the finished plate as a template to drill the holes in the body. My friend Barry TIG welded it all together and I buffed it out. The cap has a lot of shine (looks dull in the pictures). Even so, I plan to machine one out of stainless when the right remnant comes along. Is this going to be to much bling on an otherwise HAMB friendly, traditionally inspired hot rod?
I'm not in favor of bling but I would run it in a heartbeat. Let me know when you do a new one and want to dispose of this one.
Moal would approve. There's a difference between classy functional and useless and blingy. Blingy things are useless fake pieces of aluminum you buy to create the illusion that something is classy and expensive. Like the burlwood stickers, billet stick on gas door covers, and stick on chrome for late model vehicles for example. My opinion, your piece is classy and functional.
Looks nice. What color will you be painting the car? Depending on the color scheme, it may stand out a lot more. Reminds me of the LeMans caps that are on the Shelby Cobras and other vintage racers...just without the flip-top. Does the cap need a vent?
Appreciate the favorable comments. The gas cap is non-vented. The gas tank will be vented through a tube that runs up and then out through the floor. I plan on painting the body, frame, and wheels British Racing Green. Suspension and running gear will be black.
looks great if you think it is to shiney scuff it up with some scotch brite to dull it down..i think its good as is...
I like it Steve. Some button head Hylocs would look real good for fasteners. A pain to install but worth the look. Just my opinion!
Lucky, Tim, The plan is to use polished #10 stainless steel button head screws with nyloc nuts. I used common hardware for the mock up because it was handy.
That is killer cool. It has a racing inspired feel/look, yet fully functional and very apropriate. AWESOME JOB.
