Too much horsepower is never enough

Good thread and good points. I hate the fairground stupid blower cars, the owner will tell you it makes 900 hp and runs 9s. Ya right. Look at Hot Rod drag Week. You CAN drive a 6 second car. Proven with time slips and 1000 miles of highway driving, but its not easy. Will it hook on regular pavement, no. Ive run mickey drag radials on the street, and its easy to smoke them.

  2. Talking horsepower is cheap, the guys who really impress me may not have the fastest cars but they drive them and make memories doing so. A real street car has enough fuel capacity to drive further then across the fairgrounds. In my new build I am planning on a 25 gallon fuel tank as even with that I figure that will get me 100-125 miles.

And as Ryan's sticky reminder from a few weeks ago said, this is a traditional site for '65 and older, with that said, I will not do a build thread on the main page because as much as I enjoy this site, I do not want my early 70's "Street Freak" build to violate this policy. I love the early cars and think that the ET times of those days were plenty quick for a true driver.

My "Street Freak" build is due to my early influences of a childhood friend in the mid 70's and that is the reason for my build being somewhat from that era of thinking, childhood cartoonish! :D

Waddayacare, I'm sure your point is obvious, at least the one on your head is, but would you care to elucidate?

  4. That is my point! You want to see what it does then go to the dyno session when the engine is on it or to the track to see the car actually run

You are referring to Larry Larson's '66 Chevy II Nova going 6.90's and driving to every track he does it at. Very cool and very expensive! There is bookoo bucks in that car, like 6 figures plus.

With that kind of money in a car the damn thing should not only go very fast but should also give you oral sex too! (now there's your quote of the day boys)

The only way a 1000 horse car is only going to do 9.90's is if there's 6 fat broads in the car. There, you have been edjimicated! :p

HHmmm....so you know the weight of the vehicle, gearing, tires, aerodynamics, etc? You ARE good!

Like I said, it was his opinion, not mine. And, this was in a 100% streetable car that could idle all day and get over 10MPG, too.

Just like the Gold Cup being the largest gathering of Gassers and there's no '77 Vega in the group.

Too much HP on the street? Yeah, I've go it with only about 450hp judging by the track numbers. I can't even open the primaries all the way without the rear tires going up in smoke, forget abot the secondaries. Runs consistent 12teens at the track on slicks in a 3800 lb pig.

The biggest problem with these late models is weight. Yeah, they have the technology and power figured out, but then the cars are pushing 4500 lbs. Cut a ton out and I'd buy a new Camaro.

  14. If I give you a HP/Torque number you can take it to the bank.

I always remember the story some customer told about his relative's car that "had so much horsepower" that the cops made him take it off the road. He was also the same guy that told me that where came from they raced three light poles and he had never heard of "the quarter" when I asked him what his car would do in the quarter.

DW here on this board has a killer Model A that he drives quite a bit i think...

He told me at the roundup that is ~600hp

and that looks like ALOT of fun.

In racing , with all its restrictions, there is something like 'too much horsepower' but on the street, not at all ;)
I must admit though, on Norwegian roads you always end up just catching other traffic even with only 150-200 horsepower if you dare to open it up :p
I'd rather have a lightweight car that is loads of fun to drive than a heavy powerful car that can cruise all day at 150 mph...

I have my share of yellow time slips too. The laminated ones are from Bonneville, the great white dyno.

  24. DWs car is just plain fast! I got a short ride in it at the HAMB drags and the next year the car spit it's 9 inch ford pinion gear right out of the case when he hit 2nd gear! That takes a lotta power.

Out here the white ones are the winners the yellow ones are the losers.

Anything more than 350 horsepower in a daily driver is a waste!...

  30. I did that one time with a near stock '57 Ford 312. Driveshaft with the pinion still hooked on was laying on the ground...
