Very cool pickup, Roupe! The proportions and stance are perfect! I also had some fun snowmobiling on ice when I was younger. Always looked forward to the snowmobile drags on ice in South Dakota. Talk about some wicked fast sleds! Malcolm
Playing on the ice is in full swing here too. I can hear the bikes and sleds on the river about a half mile from my house, I'll have to go down and check them out soon. I see in the local paper today that three guys went through on Lake St. Clair yesterday, that's the same lake the Henry set his speed record on back in the day. They used to run motorcycle and sports car races there years ago, i don't know if they still do. They motorcycle ice racing season is going now too, a freiend e mailed me to say they were going to the first races today. The bootleggers used to cross the St.Clair river to Canada here back in the prohibition days on the ice to get booze. I've never seen that river frozen over but the old timers said it used to. The local divers tell stories about the old Fords they used to see on the bottom....
Growing up in MN seeing cars and trucks on the ice is normal. I've been in AZ for the past couple years and seeing your picture makes me miss the winters.
Cool pic! And cool pickup! I moved to the southern tip of Winnebago 12 months ago and it seemed strange to this southern Missouri boy to see all the cars and trucks on the ice. Maybe in another winter or two I'll get my nerve up to try it. Have Fun...Safely!
Seems like we're all out on a "Frozen Lake" especially on sunny brisk days! (taken a couple years ago from another HAMB'r!)
Doesn't that damage the crowning tower? And the reason you didn't see Santa is because you poked his reindeer in the butt with those antlers! Just seeing that gives me a head ache!
I used to feel the same way about the cracking noises, until I went on a winter camping trip with a couple of snowmobiler freinds a few years back. It was way below freezing all weekend, and the long narrow lake where we were camping (onshore) was groaning and making cracking noises pretty regularly, and I guess it was evident that I wasn't enjoying them too much while walking around on the ice. The guys who invited me up there assured me that as long as it's really cold out, the cracking and rumbling noises were evidence that the lake was actually "making ice" at the time, so it wasn't really a bad thing to be hearing when venturing out there. Ken
You mean the "conning" tower? No, they're actually designed to do that. You see how the fairwater planes are vertical so they can slice up through the ice better? And the rest of the conning tower is appropriately hardened.
Nice Truck! Love it! You got balls of brass, I wouldn't go out there if it was 3' thick, .............guess thats why I live in Kalyfornya.
This stuff scares the bejesus out of me, but Tuck says that it's fun and that the cracking of the ice, actually means that it's refreezing and strengthens itself. This is Tucks 51 Vicky on the ice:
I've always wanted to see how fast my truck would go in ice... then.... hit the brakes.... wonder if I'd dare to do it when being there....
Thats Awesome. That pic looks cool. I remember doing that as a kid in Twin Lakes WI. Gotta be over 30 years ago and I remember like it was yesterday. Thanks for reminding me of it.
That's really cool! Oconomowoc is a cool town. Like to take my mom out for breakfast there when we're in Wisconsin.
driving a cool truck on a frozen lake would scare me to death! Hell, driving any truck on a frozen lake would scare me to death. ....
Great post - never thought of taking out my ride in the dead of winter, you may have changed my mind. I drove my 57 oval vw in 1990 on medicine lake in plymouth minnesota, because it was my daily driver. Watch out for ice heaves! We actually got my brothers 1986 cj-7 airborne off of a heave, we did it on purpose - no kidding.
roupe i grew up on pewaukee lake, that is the best/smoothest ice i've ever seen. those southern boys don't understand the need to drive on ice or shanty towns. also, the only salt free driving you'll do in the winter... we used to zigzag accross the lake bar hopping. the only cars i have seen go through the ice, were drunks at night.
I used to go to the "Jolly Fishermans" bar for a Saturday Hydraulic lunch and watch the trucks going through the ice when we'd get that "Sudden Thaw"...!
I was snowmobiling in Mercer / Hurley WI area, one of the towns had an ice festival. The band and crowd were on the ice, with the outdoor bar on the dock.
