  2. My new anvil was forged in 1880. Seems to be hanging tough.

So, what is teh concensous for a good new vise? I have one big old ******* that is tough as nails and probably at least 5 decades old, and one chinease one in the fab room that is the same as one I already broke. Guess which one I want to replace...

When you buy American s**** steel/iron and don't know what the **** you are doing when you mix them and make it. The ones that crack in half...are all castings...not forgings...big difference. You get what you pay for.

If you want a vise to last a lifetime, you might want to buy one that is warrantied for a lifetime. ;)

    Rigid Brand Bench Vise

Made from 75 ksi forged steel, the 6" wide jaw will open up to 8" or 10". Weighs about 70 lbs with the swivel base.

They're a damned nice vise, if a little spendy. I got mine on sale from Enco for $275 with free shipping. I think they're normally $349, which is still a pretty good deal for a med/large USA made vise with a lifetime warranty.

Compare that to a Columbia vise for near a grand, or a Wilton (which is made in China now BTW) for about $600, and even the full price seems not so bad.
