You may not remember from my intro a month or so ago that I am just finishing up my first car, a '55 Chevy. (Here's a link.)

I'm making a deal with a friend of mine, he has a '74 bug that he wants restored, but doesn't want a full frame-off done. He's willing to buy the tools and materials I would need to do it in exchange for the work. And he's ok with me learning and practicing my skills on his car. The deal would be beneficial to both of us, but I need to put together a list of required tools and supplies just to see if this is even viable.

I already have most of the air tools I would need, plus the regular mechanics tools.

I will be mainly replacing the floor pans and replacing some panels. I will probably have to make most of the patches from scratch. I'll also be doing some front end upgrades, and general repairs. The engine work and interior will be done by others, and the painting may or may not be done by me - depending on if I think I can do a good job of it.

    I've already got:

    Mechanic's Tools
    Impact Wrench
    Die Grinder
    Cut-off Tool
    Air Hammer
    Jack, jack stands
    Drills, etc...

    Here's what I know I need:

Welder (Hobart 175 Mig Welder, probably)
Air Compressor (in the $700-$800 range)
Angle Grinder (and/or DA Sander - recommendations?)
Decent Paint Gun (suggestions on a good one that isn't TOO expensive?)
Various supplies, including a welding helmet, respirator, torque wrench, etc...

Can you guys give me any suggestions? I always tend to under-estimate needs and prices, so if you have some tips, I'd really appreciate them!

they are great for temporary fitting of weld on panels and you can use them forever
