Ok fellas... I need some feedback. The Jalopy Journal is obviously not a tool forum. We have www.garagejournal.com for that. However, I've had two users ask why we don't allow some specific threads regarding tools onboard that are specific to certain tasks required for building hot rods. I'm actually ok with that I guess so long as it doesn't get out of hand and the questions/content are specific to tasks... What do you guys think? Keep in mind that garagejournal.com already staffs representatives from just about every major tool brand... so questions about welders can be answered by people from Miller, Lincoln, etc... questions about hand tools can be answered by people from Snap-On and ridiculed by people that buy from Harbor Freight, etc... This is more about specific needs and specific tools... I guess???
Great idea. For example: The vintage precision early Ford hub puller... essential. Or the Eastwood flaring tool. Two things I wish I had bought long before I finally pulled the trigger.
It makes sense but you can guarantee it won't stay focused on what you want it to and it will be a bunch of what welder should I buy threads. Maybe we need a seperate sub forum like The Antiquated.
I agree, getting 'advice' from touts working for the manufacturers isn't always very helpful. Real-world reports from end-users (us) can strip away the hype or validate a manufacturers' claims. Tool threads are ones I always read, you never know what you might learn.
Well, I have had two threads closed having to do with tools, Building cars require the use of tools and until the last year or so they seem to be off topic with some moderators and not others, It's a slippery slope when the moderators can't agree on the topic. I have used the garage journal in the past with help for lighting & air compressor help, It's OK but I'm more of a hamber and this is where I prefer to get my information. Maybe a dedicated listing for any kind of tools we would use in the construction of Hot Rods & Customs. I remember you asking about the antiquated section and it has been a well used section. HRP
If it were my call (and most everything in the world would be better off if it were) I would give it a go and moderate the threads on a case by case basis for those that appear to be veering toward the off-ramp from the "highway to hot rods".
as they say, the difference between a street rod and a hot rod is, the street rod has a can of wax in the trunk, and a hot rod has tools in the trunk. so...why not talk about tools?
Does this include a tool only specific classifieds? Like going to car shows, I head to the swap meet first. While my tastes are my own, I am sure I represent a percentage of those who use HAMB more than Garage Journal or The Ford Barn. AND, would it cross-reference to the other sites which would make it, tool specific, and much like the old card catalog system in libraries before computers and a god send for those looking for the one-of-a-kind tool or puller/come all, or literature detailing year, make, model that is sometimes essential in getting it right the first time. Big area, yes. But, all this comes with baby steps. GO FOR IT Ryan. It can always implode if it goes too far toward minutia.
I get what Ryan is saying you don’t want the HAMB to get all jumbled up with tool threads when the Garage journal is there. but asking about tools used or tools preferred to do a specific job or how to set up your space for ( body removal , rotisserie, sheet metal fab etc) I think would be beneficial to the site, what about another forum like the antiquated forum ?
After talking with Ryan, I opened the 2 threads on tools that I locked this morning. I think I know where you guys are coming from. You know and trust the opinions of the members here, where asking the Garage journal people is like asking the advice of a stranger....
Good move, hard not to have a build or simple how to thread without reference to tools. No we don't need threads on what is or isn't a good tool from HF, but if it's how the other guy spins a magneto on his distributor machine or how to set up a Tig welder to improve ones welds I'd think it'd fit right in
Agree as mentioned above, it would be nice if it was a separate section such as the antiquated forum.
I feel its a good idea myself. honestly there have been a couple tools that I came close to buying but after reading on other forums decided it was money better spent elsewhere. 1 that comes to mind is the door pin removal tool, some liked it others didn't so i passed as the anti group came from a more trusted set of gents. So I say yes as the guys here are hands on and actually use their tools and this is the guys I want advice from. so thank you Ryan !
I'm the "other" guy........... I felt that generally the tools and threads discussed on the Hamb were related because we all need tools to build our cars. I'm a confessed "toolaholic" and I find that the tools discussed on the Hamb generally are useful in automobile work even if they can be used for other things. I really felt that the Garage Journal tool threads was too generic for most Hamb guys, and lacked the "comradre" that is available on the Hamb. I built a "Citric Acid" bath from a large plastic tote......one of those big plastic cubes that holds a couple hundred gallons of water. I got the idea from someone on the Hamb. It works beautifully.......and I probably never would have seen the info on the acid if it hadn't been on the hamb. I can take all the old rusty crap I have had laying around and hang it in the tank and forget about it for several days. Pull it out, hose it off, and spray a little paint on it. Now its in pretty good condition sitting on a shelf instead of rusting away in the yard. Had a couple of 9" Ford backing plates that were so coated with rust I was thinking about tossing them. Soaked em and pulled out while ago. They look pretty decent now. The thing is that its hard to talk about welding old cars and not talk about welders. Hard to talk about bleeding brakes and never mention flaring tools and bleeding tanks. Talk about installing A/C on your rod and you might get into which crimping tool lets you make custom hoses. There are a thousand examples. The one thing that I thought "Tool Threads" usually have in common is there seems to be more cooperative responses and less "gotcha". So I want to Thank Ryan and Moriarity for making this happen. Now we don't have to sort through threads on wood planers, concrete mixers, and table saws to find relevant tool info.
I HATE subforums. Landracing.com is a prime example of having one for every little thing. The same questions get asked in multiple places, searching is a fiansco, some folks only hang out in one or two subs etc....
^^^If we got requests like Denny said about the "best 3/8" drive extension", would we have to have a separate answer for the metric crowd?
The one that is long enough to do the job , sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I am mostly here on the Hamb ,but being a tool addict I go to garage journal a bit somehow I get the feeling that the most of those guys don't get their hands as dirty as the Hamb boys do .
