    For looks:
    '32 Ford Roadster
    '34 Ford 5-W Coupe
    '36 Ford 3-W Coupe
    '40 Ford Standard Coupe ( it's a grill thing...)
    '49 Merc 2-D

Shit, need another 5 to cover '55 Chevy, 59 El Camino, '66 El Camino, '66 Chevelle, '67 Camaro . . . hang on, what about Vettes? What about '65 Belvederes? What about the rest? No, gonna give up there.

Then again, for design, the Model T must be just about perfect - does exactly what it was supposed to do, and without it, would we all be driving cars of any sort?

I'd agree that most of the cars on this list would actually make a great top 10, but as for a top 5 I base mine not only on my personal taste but popularity as well.

    1. 1932 Ford
    2. 1957 Chevy (I prefer '56s, but they are the least popular of the Tri-5s)
    3. 1969 Camaro
    4. 1940 Ford
    5. 1949 Mercury

WOW Deuce Roadster- I typed this up abot 11am today- but it wouldn't let me post it! Our lists are nearly identical!!!

If we're talking stock, and based on looks alone:

    63 vette
    65/66 mustang fastback/shelby gt350
    36 ford 3-w
    32 roadster
    bubbletop impala

lincoln zephyr is almost in there too

    For complete design (looks, mechanicals):

    06/07 vette
    69 ZL-1 camaro
    63 FI split-window vette
87 buick GN (hey, it was the 80's and shit else was going on, give them some credit)
55 chevy (start of the sbc, thats worth something)

A shelby cobra isn't really an "american" design, but if it was it would be in there.

    1962 belair bubbletop (tied-best.design.ever)
    1961 bonneville hardtop (tied-best.design.ever)
1961 cadillac coupe deville (luxo version of best.design.ever)
1968 malibu (the cheap one, not the ss-plain aluminum grill, minimalist tailights)
gt-40 (boy racer fantasy car of the sixties)

what can i say,i love bubbletops? i dislike convertibles, 'cause they're always a design compromise, either up or down...

    1955 Chevy 210
    1967 Olds 442 with w-30 option
    1933 Ford coupe (damn you Larry.:D )
    1956 Mercury Monterey-sexy.
    30-31 Ford Coupe

that said, as far as Chassis are concerned...

64-72 general motors a-body- the most bulletproof design ever.
1932 ford frame- Beauty and function.
70's model Jeep- if it werent for shocks, almost a full 12 inches suspension travel
second generation G.M. f-Body. shame about the back half of the cars, but the clip is a kiler.
Tri 5 Chevrolet.- simple, and brutal.

you will notice there is no mention of Mustang 2.

    at all.

I find this kind of poll irresistable, even though (1) I don't think anybody will take time to read my list and (2) I don't think anybody gives a shit what I think are the best cars.

I can't get the list to hold still long enough to make up my mind, so I'll just put down the first 5 that came to mind:

    50 Ford Convert (top up)
    61 Pontiac Bubbletop
    Cord 812 Cabriolet (top down)
    40 Ford Deluxe Coupe
    34 Ford 3-window Coupe

    3. Shelby AC Cobra
    4. 31-34 Stutz DV 32
    5. 57 Chevy Bel-Air

Keeping it to 5 is really tough. It is hard to leave off other cars. 35/36 Auburn Speedster, 66 Olds Torando, 67 Eldo, Model T, 53 Eldo, 63 Corvette, ...
