I think it's rediculous how some people like to put a price on something they know nothing about. You know, we don't go down to Ruckus' place of employment and tell him how much he should charge to copulate men.

Ruckus, I will chop your top and pay you $5000 for your trouble. I have a very complete metal shop and can metal finish this project if you will help me out with some minor paper work.

As it turns out I am a close relative to a Ethiopian prince and am looking to spread the wealth. I will send you a check for $10,000 dollars and the day you put it in the bank send me a western union for $5000. Then just bring the car to Ethiopia and I will get the chop done in the first day with the metal finish by the end of the week. If you would like show quality paint just let me know, I can send you an extra $5000 for the opportunity to perform this service for a nice guy like you.

I would just love if you could give me your business and we could become new bestest friends forever and ever. So do we have a deal?? Please Please Please!

    Signed you new friend Mike.

Ruckus, I am so sorry, I just notice in the original post no 4,5, 6k ...... SO I will pay you an even 7k. I'll just change my original check to $20,000 and you send me $13,000. I think in this economy where I should be humble to good customers like yourself that this deal would work better for both of us.

  6. Ummmm . . . guys . . . did anyone notice that the OP hasn't posted again in this thread? Or that in his year and a half on this site only the two posts in this thread WEREN'T in the classified section?

Maybe he is really trying to move forward here, getting an idea of what it would cost to chop the 49 Hudson he's been trying to sell here for more than a year.

    Or not.

I am in no means a full time builder, rather a full time tattoo artist and the manager of the shop... and yes we do damn good work at our shop, and yes we charge for it.

We're not expensive by any means and we know the economy has hit everyone so we try to work with people if their finances to not match up with our quote that's why we're staying in business while others are drowning.

That being said, if someone were to come into the shop and say i want this tattoo for "x" amount when it is clearly worth 3x that i will tell them to leave. Sorry i'm not a charity worker and i do have a mouth to feed and a severe car and nicotine addiction to feed. And honestly it's damn right insulting when people say we're too expensive b/c they can get it for $50 from the guy working out of his kitchen. My reply is always " then go to him but we will be here when you want to get it fixed."

And i charge "asshole tax" for wasting my time in the first place. :D

If i were to run the shop like that we would be out of business in a week. Saying that $4-6K for a chop is expensive is in insult to the people that do them day in and day out. No fucking wonder the board is in an upheavel over this guy who has clearly tuck tailed and run. Maybe he just wanted to come in and start a "ruckus" :D

Wow I would rather work on my own projects than loose money doing work for nothing. Time is money if you don't like my rates do it your self! I have told one or two clients this over the years.

Or he's clearly moved forward, gotten quotes, and obviously thinks it's outlandish that such skilled people charge appropriately for their time and felt like fishing around here for either sympathy or someone that will pity him and do it for him.

It's not so much that he thinks those prices are too much, it's the comment that this is a hobby that i think touched the nerve with everyone. It's a hobby when you do it for yourself. If you're doing it as a profession, then it's your job and you should get paid accordingly.

What pisses me off the most is his use of the "...in these times" bullshit! Because the economy is tight I don't have to pay a fair price attitude is FUCKING out of control!! Companies, governments, and now apparently, John Q Dickhead is running that scam. Well fuck you very much. -stick

  12. I'm a professional who charges more than most in my field because I do a damn good job. When someone doesn't want to pay for my services, I tell them to fuck off and let them walk out the door. I don't then go on and bitch to all of my friends how someone didn't like what I charged, I just do more work for those that do.

They say there's a small number of people that use a professional's services: those that are smart enough to know they need help but not smart enough to know how to do it themselves. The OP is obviously on the low end of that scale and isn't worth working for. He's not alone.

Let it go and don't get your feelings hurt over someone not understanding what it takes to chop a top.

I may get heat for this, but I don't care really.

I do understand where you, most of you are coming from. I too feel the same way about taking pride in my work and it being worth a fair amount.

What I don't get is how from a typed paragraph, albeit with some interestingly phrased sentences, where anyone can know enough about a person to judge them as "not worth working for".

None of us know the dude. I know that all of us have mis-represented ourselves at least once. True first impressions are a MOFO to get over, but really, you're gonna judge a persons worth from this thread.

I'm glad I'm not the standard society is measured from, that would be so much pressure...

  15. every time i see one of Berkey's post VVith lots of "W"s in it i picture him sittin behind his laptop in a vampire cape with high arched eyebrows and some plastic vamp fangs....

i guess its "VV" or type like the guy on south park who couldn't say the letter "T"...

    lets go to the plane_arium....

sorry for the visual. i need a nap.

    good thread.

I don't understand why these days it seems as though a lot of people have this sense of entitlement. They think the world owes them something. What ever happened to respect of what another persons skills and ambitions are? It sounds horrific, but a part of me almost hopes for a 3rd world war to bring people back to their senses,to feel what its like to have nothing and lose everything, maybe then the sense of entitlement will go away, and we'll learn to adapt and overcome, instead of demanding it from someone else.

  17. when people walk into my shop talking price before anything else, I simply let them know that if they are shopping strictly based on price, then i am not the shop for them. i'll even point them to other shops.

the conversation usually goes like this...

    how much to do la-dee-da....

    about $xxx.xx

well the guy down the street said he'd do it for $xx.xx

then i think you should be talking to him, not me.

so you can't do it for that price?

i WON'T do it for that price.

if they seem like decent human beings, i'll take the time to explain our pricing and ethics, and why we charge what we charge. but if they appear to be boneheads, i show them the door.

there is no such thing as DISCOUNT auto repair OR custom work. you'll pay full price if not twice one way or another.

VVOVV, now thats a response..sorry kids, had to get some shut eye. anyways, to explain. one of my "few" friends pointed me in the direction of a certain shop. I went in only to be met by one serious dik hed. thinks hes gonna be the next big thing on discovery channel or sumthin. anyways. that set the tone for my post not to mention i wrote it at 5am. maybe should have slept on it first but the whole encounter just really pissed me off. i re read it and realized i didnt do the true craftsmen any justice and i used one encounter with one arrogant tool to generalize. so to you who know what ur doin i apologize. to those here just to run your mouths i DONT apologize. after thinking about it, maybe dude just had a shit day and took it out on me. never the less..be professional, that is not how u get customers my friend. and dont think just cuz people on here talk shit to me that they have your back. they would be embarrased by u. thanks for the p.m.,s ill be lookin into sum of those. and for those who cant afford a shrink but need to vent, keep em comin little buddy

So, you expect some bids on a job after all this? Just for the sake of arguement, what DO YOU think is a reasonable amount of money for the job? And, what is this car you're talking about? You haven't dug yourself out of this hole yet, and hey, I'm ready to butter some popcorn...

I'd also like to ask what you're demeanor was when you went to this "arrogant tool" was? Did you walk in expecting a certain price?

Maybe he was an arrogant tool b/c of your disposition, judging from that first post i would have reacted the same way if your attitude then was the the same as when you posted. Your response to the previous 4 pages was as judgemental as any other post here, so i cannot say the reactions you recieved were unwarranted or unfair.

If you knew $5k was a good price you would have suited yourself better to do some searching as to those who have chopped similar vehicles and pm'd them to inquire about their prices. Or even just opened up the discussion for debate with a "approximately how much would you charge to chop this car (insert picture here)" Just my opinion but respect goes a long way with everyone you encounter.
