What are my best top options for a 32' roadster. The bop top looks really nice but priced at 26 hunnies. Is there anymore options out there?

  2. Dude make your own...that way it will look EXACTLY the way YOU want it.

At least, thats what Im gonna do when the time comes, and I know EXACTLY how I want it to look.

Give it a go, what have you got to lose?

Well there are repro tops that are less than that. You could check Ebay, I know there are a few auctions for repo tops other than the one you would find at say Bob Drake or Dennis Carpenter. Those run about $750.

Course you still have to put a top on them. I got an original on ebay for $500, chopped it two inches and leghthend it 6 for my project.

If you dont care if it folds down you could buy the wood bows and fab your own irons. Most roadsters either run without them, or to the event, and keep the top at the hotel.

  4. Pull the windshield off, put a tonneau on it. Hahaaa.

  6. I helped build something similar to a Bop top only it came apart much quicker. EMT Conduit, machined spuds to connect the parts. I believe it broke down into 6 large pieces. I posted pics, maybe I can go find them?

Here are 3 I've built. Orange roadster is my sons. I bent the bows and he finished it. Mooron car is mine(I've sold it) Roadster Pu is my current project. None of these tops fold and all are made out of common materials.

Time Machines in Charlevoix, MI makes one similar to Bop Top only much higher quality. It's actually a piece of jewelry with all of it's precision machined parts. The price is north of $2500 I'm told but from the two I've seen you will never beat the quality.

My dad has had a Bop Top on his car for about 60k of the 90,000+ miles (it was ******* for the first few years) on his car and he loves it. He has never folded it though, just takes it off in one piece in less than 5 min.

I have a Bop Top, it is great, I hardly use it, it has been rolled up, fits behind my seat for most of the 4 years and 40K miles. It goes up and down in about 15minutes. It has been on the car maybe 8 days out of the last 4 trips cross the USA. But is is nice to have with me when it is going to be a pouring rain day. ( I know I'm a wuss) It no more money than the other folding tops that you can buy and has a nice look to it.

Dave, did you hit your head again?

Period correct 40's roadsters did not have Bop Tops.
Tops on roadsters are for sissys anyway.
But if you insist on having one call me I got some ideas.

You can buy the front wood header and the rear window from Sid Chavers, and then bend your own tubing. Saves a little money that way. Speedway also has rear windows.

They called them Gypsie tops in the old days. Basicly stock or chopped with the sail panel filled.

I bought the origional style irons and wood bows from Labaron Bonney for about 550, then I bought a 33/34 rear window from them for around 200.

I cut and hacked to get the look and fit I wanted. Then had to pay a guy to do the material.

But in the end it was exaclty what I wanted and had an authentic look to it.

Check out Labaron Bonney, they have options.

I plan on making my own version of the Bop Top.

Any photos anyone might want to share would be welcome. I just can't see paying that kind of $$ for something that I should be able to knock out myself without much trouble.

    Great thread. Thanks.

I have been missing around with one. Im no pro(obviously)so....if you have any words of wisdom, please feel free. I started with about $40 in materials and just started chopping, drilling and welding. I have a friend helping with the cover, fresh out of Wyo-tech. Wish us the best.:D
