Are the later toploader gear boxes the same size as 39 and older?
    And are they stronger?

Later like this four speed toploader, 1960's style, most Ford hi-perf cars used them.

    39 style three speed.

    Worlds apart.

  3. The later is much stronger. I swapped my 39 3 speed for a 3.03 ford top loader 3 speed with a Jeep shifter conversion and I beat on it pretty good. Plus it’s fully synchronized. 80B075DE-4110-4F53-8D08-9B17F25E4C0E.jpeg E61AC052-DC0B-45C8-90C4-C33DF6E7E0C4.jpeg

Im thinkin about the flathead era 3speeds and power handling. Can a 36 handle more power than a flathead? Is the 39 better? I know about the better syncro. Im not going to burn tires and such.
So question is, is there a go to gearbox of the same size or can one buy new gears that handle more power?
