I'm in the market for an oxy/acetylene torch and have seen the recent discussions about Henrobs. Sounds great and that's what I'd like but my needs are for home and hobby purposes only and the price seems a little high for my pocketbook. I've got a Lincoln 225 stick welder so I can do the heavier stuff but I need something to cut with and to weld sheet metal. I need the whole set up, regs, tanks, etc. Would I be throwing my money away by getting something like one of those $75 kits like you see on e-Bay? Any suggestions? Thanks for any input. ~Rodney
If your looking for something to weld sheet metal i wouldnt recomend getting torches, unless you really know how to control the torch. I would get a little mig welder. Then for cutting use a cut off wheel. If you use a torch for your body and sheetmetal youll be in for alot more work then you planned getting it straight and cleaning up were you cut it etc. Nate
Get a torch set up and LEARN control. I don't know about the torch sets on ebay, but I have yet to try a torch that didn't work. The Henrob is worth the money, but you can learn, and still get good results with a cheaper set. Nate, time to learn to gas weld!
I can gas weld! I just like a mig welder. You know alot more than me, so take his advice and not mine! LOL. Nate
go brand new name brand like a Victor mid size setup from a welding shop near you. you will be dealing with them and they should be familiar with you and your setup. sometimes shops will have reconditioned units too, if you want to save a buck or two. Paul
A friend of mine got one of the Harbor Freight torch kits - about $100 for regulators and torches. I thought it was ****. It didn't seem to stay adjusted, so I was constantly messing with the mix, and it made for unproductive welding. I have an older Victor set, and it's like a Chevette vs Mercedes. I've had really good experience with these guys - low prices, good services, no taxes, no shipping - and I have no relation to them other than being a satisfied customer. I went here after I tried my local shop, and found it to ****. IOC Welding Supply They have an "entry level" gas rig for $185 (Victor, no bottles) and it goes up from there. Tackett
