(note - after posting it, I noticed it on the main board. ron) Not a Ford, but the lesson to learn isn't brand specific. What happens when ya forgets to torque the lugnuts? And ya don't think a firebottle is needed? Got the below article and pics from a nonHAMB friend, I didn't confirm but sadly it looks too real to be just an 'urban legend'. -------------------------------------- "You Thought Your Weekend Was Bad?" Some Dude in M***achusetts just finished this 1938 Plymouth on Friday April 29th 2011. Saturday April 30th was to be a shakedown drive of about 50 miles just to see how it would run. While driving along and the left rear wheel came off. The car dropped and the gas tank was punctured. The rest, as they say, is history. He said all 5 lug nuts had come off and the studs were stripped on the updated 1990 Explorer rear end. All 3 pictures were taken on Saturday April 30 2011 , "within an hour of each other" This was A Beautiful Car ....! ! !
plz say he had insurance. buddy of mine swerved to miss a deer in his 31 model a, clipped it anyway, and another buddy, following way too close and *** ended him with his late model. neither vehicles had insurance.
what should the torque specs be on a steel wheel? i heard that they dont need to be torqued as much as a aluminum? if it matters, its on a 54 ford.
You torque them to "goodandtight". If you don't have a "feel" from experience, look the torque spec up in a manual and tighten to that.
Yes, he had insurance. Last I heard, about a week or so ago, he was already looking for his next project- and in surprisingly good spirits.
Before I put my Yard Art on the road, I got it up on the lift and started at the front and "wrenched" every nut and bolt and had my buddy mark each one with a sharpie to make sure we got every one.... we actually missed one nut without a mark..... proves that even with two guys something can be missed. We also use this method on our Bonneville car before each run....
I hate to see things like that happen to a car guy ! Sometimes you just never know when something will go wrong ! As long as everyone got out safely , the car can be replaced ! Jim
If I remember correctly he had a bottle behind the front seat. By the time he got it pulled over and was exiting the car he didn't think he had time to get the extinguisher out. He was running a poly tank and when the wheel let loose it dragged the tank, shredding it and starting the fire. As you can see he was on the freeway when this happened, doing 60-65.
