Ok so I am closing in on having to get tires to make my project in another thread the "Whatever Project" a roller. I checked out Towel City Tire's line of retread old style Vintage tires and the look of their pie crust cheater slick is what I want for the rear.

My questions for the HAMB inteligencia (that's not an insult...) include:
    Anyone use these tires?
    Do/Did you like them?
    Are/were they good wearing?
Anything anyone have to say about them?
I'm looking for any and all comments to help guide my decision and know that I'll find guidance here.

    Oh and Merry Christmas

  2. They are good. Several threads on here discussing them

  3. 7 pages of them no less. I like mine, put several thousand miles on them. I swap em out if expecting wet weather though.

It's what I went with after reading opinion after opinion. I haven't ran mine yet but I couldn't find hardly anyone saying bad things about them.

I have a set on my '33. Before the car was on the road, I was testing out the transmission on jack stands and noticed they have a fair amount of runout. I thought it might be an issue, but I cannot feel it at all out on the road. They do 80mph just like any other tire. I have not and will try not to test their wet weather performance.

Liked mine enough on my Austin gasser to buy a 2nd pair for my '39 Chev coupe.

I had Hurst pie crust on my '63 Falcon gasser, and they wore like iron, but I could spin them the full length of the 1/8 mile strip. No traction, no matter how hot I got them in the water box. The Towel City hook up much better!
And Towel City offers theirs capped on new or used casings, so that's a nice feature.

Thanks guys. I was able to find a couple of the threads mentioned. Hey if you read my "Whatever Project" 1st installment you'll understand why I am somewhat useless on using computers. I appreciate the above.

I just ordered the wheels I'll be using, and I intend to get the 8 inch pie crusts. I also ordered some new grooving iron blades for my 50 year old heated Ideal grooving iron, as I intend to groove them in the good old dirt track waffle pattern like back in the day. Just take some chalk and lay out the pattern before cutting and then have at it.

Fronts are still up in the air... Maybe their front vintage look radials, buffed clean. I kind of like the look.

They run out fine! These are 30" tall and 9"wide and built on new tires not used carcasses. TC offers that now as an upcharge. I added the side siping .

I like every one of these cars pictured. So many wants, so little $$$.
So any recommendations for the front? Towel City's fronts? Or something like Coker Tires bias look radials? Opinions?

Wow look how nice this 55 is coming up in the air on take off. Looks like a lot of work went into this cars suspension..

Right On! Perfection! Even the license plate..

Ever see a car on here that looks perfect to you, this one and that Orange 57 is mine.

I really dig the exhaust pipes, the paint job and the license plate.. I also like the sound of those straight cut gears in the four speed box.. I'd have to have a deep rumbling 302 with a Dontov 30/30 cam. Vintage Douglass headers, with Douglass glass packs or Porters steel packs..

Dreracecar, just a question then about the tire delaminating: was the casing a new casing or reused old casing?

I remember the recaps back in the 60's made from old tires used to shed caps routinely, and that is my main concern. But by the sound of things Towel City has it figured out.

We had a pair on our 62 dragmaster--see my avatar--last spring we switched to a modern slick and gained almost a full second on the first pass--they look great and perform well, have held up for 4 years with dozens of runs but can't match up to a modern slick. For the street i think they are a great choice as they have the look, and we haven't had any problems with them, other then not hooking up like a modern slick.

I think the photo is messing with you, both fronts are on the ground, the shadow on the ground makes it look like its lifting tire...... i wish

  22. Agree completely, not for serious racing. Maybe a smoking track length run for a nostalgia event would be OK.:)
Cool FED by the way. Looks great!

In the old days it was prob an old casing, but I believe these are new casings with the tread grounded off and a new cap applied. From what I saw, the edge of the cap where it was touching the sidewall was peeling up, as in not enough heat in the molding process to get it to stick. Cant say if this is a common problem or a one time defect, but with any recap tire, one should look at them from time to time, more so when a long trip is planned

I did a 1250 mile trip first part of October in my '39 Chev with the towel City 9" pie crust slicks. Mine are on 8.5" rims on both my Austin and the '39 Chev coupe. I was cruising at 70-75 mph most of the trip, and the TC slicks drove flawlessly with just two grooves.

Do not take my post as a knock on TC, they offer a quality product at a decent price and I continue to recommend them to clients, but the clients have to purchase them, themselves

Towel City told me their pie crust slick compound is close to a D rating, which is a medium hardness. I know once I heat mine up at the strip they hook extremely well. On the street they hook great without any heat also.

Why not post a picture of your car so we can give you a real opinion?

CAR??? So farit's an almost rolling chassis. I am building the "Whatever" in my mind more than in the garage. Been out of the garage for a number of days, back issues. Should be up and running (that's me, not the car) around the 1st of the year. Am also planning on getting the body on order soon, a t-bucket and turtle deck.
