I was putzing around on e-bay today and came across an A Pickup powered by a toyota 4 cylinder with hemispherical heads looked like a pretty cool motor,it says its using harley CV Carbs, does anybody now anything about theese motors?
didn't the V8s come in heavy trucks like ambulances, I thought they where only on the other side of the ocean though
Not sure, but I've seen some rods back in oz withtoyota hemi's...they look pretty damn cool but are a little smaller.
not sure on that motor may be a 4age with a custom valve cover on it. and there are places that can import any jap motor u want. ive gotten a few for my hondas i had. i was going to put in a toyota 6 cyl dohc hemi in my 50 chevy. but decided just to go sbc. but the toyota 6 is very simalir to the stovebolt in many ways. hell the toyota bellhousing onley need two bolt holes oblonged to fit a early chevy 3 speed. and they make side draft carb kits for most older toyota motors as well. allso both toyota trans and chevy use a 10 inch clutch so the 10 spline input shaft does not have to be changed to work with the stock (toyota) pressure plate and flywheel. one day ill do a crazy swap but for the 50 i wanted to just go easy on the motor swap. but toyota does offer alot of cool rwd base hemi motors. (7mge is the one i have allso make a turbo version of that 7mgte) Bryan
here is a Toyota Hemi V8, a few of these motors were imported to Australia in the 80s they originally came out in Crowns and Limos. Sorry that is all I know
the one pictured is either a 2TC (1600cc) or a 3TC (1800cc) toy motor. i have some extra 3TC heads that I was gonna try to find another bolck with similar cyl spacing and build my own mini V8.
Yup, what Seymour said. The 2TC and 3TC motors are half of the V8 Toyota Hemi. They are all aluminum and the V8's look killer when all polished up. There is a short piece on them in the Tex Smith Hemi book. They were manufactured from '70-'82, only avalible in crown and limo's in the Asian market, and came in 3.4L(207 CI) and 3.8L(231 CI). Made around 200 HP, and weighed about 250 LBS. -Jeff
Toyota made a tiny Hemi V8 too; they came in 1967-73 Toyota Centurys, and they had a small displacement (around 182ci). *edit - 'pears I was wrong on my displacements and years * Here's a couple for sale: http://www.trademe.co.nz/nz/auction-3180523.htm They came in butt ugly cars that looked like this: http://us1.webpublications.com.au/static/images/articles/i11/1127_10mg.jpg
[ QUOTE ] didn't the V8s come in heavy trucks like ambulances, I thought they where only on the other side of the ocean though [/ QUOTE ] Not in the trucks but in their large luxury barges, believe they're called Crowns. Carps posted a lot of info on those motors and their history few years back. the 2TC's if memory serves me share a lot of parts with the V8s. Someone should forward this to Carps who is always willing to share and enlighten us on the mini HEMIs.
I was at my local Toyota dealer getting my Tacoma serviced just the other day and they have a brand new all aluminum hemi V8 setting on in engine stand in the middle of the parts department show room. It would look killer in a rod
[ QUOTE ] ...3.4L(207 CI) and 3.8L(231 CI). Made around 200 HP, and weighed about 250 LBS. -Jeff [/ QUOTE ] Wow. That's a pretty decent amount of power out of a motor that weighs practically nothing. Considering the obvious potential due to the heads its sporting, I'm kind of surprised I don't hear more about them. Is there a whole world of rodded Toyota V8 Hemi's in Japan, Australia, etc. that I'm completely unaware of? That one in the pic has me thinking the answer is yes. What about aftermarket parts & whatever?
The bad part is, they're ultra-rare. The only cars that got the Hemi V8s were the exported, big cars like armor-proofed sedans for diplomats, ambulances, and limousines. And as you can see, they're getting old, so they are tough to find and there is no aftermarket for them whatsoever. There is really a good piece on them in Tex Smith's Hemi book. A nice two-page spread that tells a lot about em.
Bummer. It'd be kinda different to do an old sports car (or old Toyota for that matter) with a hemi v8 that weighed the same or less than the original 4 banger!
Here's some pics I took of one in Tulsa a few years ago. They look a lot more like an old hemi than the new mopar ones do.
OH MAN, I want one of those, with a 4-71 on top. Or maybe a smaller blower, if that would be way out of proportion. Is the one in this black rod different from the one in the "A" that was pictured? The valve covers don't look the same.
My 82 corrolla had a mild 3tc in it, cute little hemi. The head had been milled 30 thousandths, header installed and a rochester two barrel that the previous owner had adapted. It wasnt what youd call a fast car, but it was good on the freeway.
I just got rid of my 2tc 4 cyl. hemi...dual sidedraft webers, header and a hot cam....the guy that assembled it said it should put out about 150 HP...not bad for an engine that I could pick up and set in the back of a truck by myself!! (with the aluminum flywheel and clutch installed!) of course I ain't no little guy!
So again, just to clarify which cars had the hemi V8's in them (not 4-cyl's)... which ones? And what are the differences in the V8's? It's obvious they are not the same. Are there any guru's out there on this stuff? Maybe some older Japanese gentleman who happens to look just like the old man on the "Karate Kid"....
[ QUOTE ] spose thatd be out of an older rwd corola? [/ QUOTE ] That's what I thought, 3AC I believe it was.
A couple of years ago this topic was brought up, I could not find it in the history, maybe was before last server change.. Carps was the most up on these if I remember correctly, Australia was the largest recipient of these cars/motors after the Japanese sold them as used. I would bet he has a couple in his little stash of things.. From all the posts as I remember, these were the highlights: the Crown Limo and some ambulances received these motors. In the 70's/early 80's, the Japanese economy was booming, in the circles that these cars were marketed for, they were often replaced every two to three years, very very little use for a larger sized, larger engined used car in Japan during this time, so if it was not scraped and recycled, it was sold to other markets, most to Autralia and Malasiaya. As for finding one of these cars in a boneyard somewhere on a mountain side in the country, well, Japan really does not have a boneyard type mentality.. After a couple of years, cars are melted down for new cars and/or become Kirin or Asahi vending machines.

[/ QUOTE ] It's the Toyota T series engines {T = 1400cc & 3T = 1600cc) as used in the early Corolla (KE 10. 11, 20 & 30 Series) models from '66 thru to the early seventies. Pretty much bullet proof in their standard configuration they were also used to power a wide range of sports and open wheeler racing cars, as well of course, as Corolla based racers. TRD (Toyota Racing Developments) and others made a mountain of speed equipment for these little engines. And yes the combustion chamber is a genuine Hemispherical type although the 2TG was the engine of choice for racers as it had a pent Roof combustion chamber with twin overhead camshafts acting directly on the velves.
