Sorry to revive an older thread. Has anyone has any real world experience with this tracking device (Spot)? Summer is coming and I thought I would investigate these further.

    Thanks

Anybody know if any work in a locked trunk. I have a roadster and few places to hide anything. Under the seat, trunk or underneath is it. No metal in the seat so maybe a signal in thru the back of the seat??

There are several units which do that sort of thing. The only problem is many are there one day and gone the next.

The service you get is key. What cost is the pings back to the cell towers. I set up a unit a while back and made a circuit where it was always off but used a vibration sensor to awake the circuit if moved. This kept pings down to a minimum.

It also allowed the GPS unit to come alive if the car moved. It did not have to be started. Towing would easily activate the tracking.

Problem with boats not updating has to do with the fact that they get away from land. It is not that they do not get GPS...it's that they loose cell tower signals to send the info back.

I worked for a GPS company some time back. We were actually doing alternative tracking with a crude form of cell tower triangulation. In this situation we could get it to a 1/2 mile circle no problem.

The advantage to cell triangulation was we could track loads in the back of shipping containers. We could not get GPS but we typically had adequate cell coverage to get cell communication.

In one situation a thief had ripped the antenna from the tracker. We did lose GPS but still had enough signal to communicate and locate the truck!

    Yes.

  6. Rocky Mountain Tracking, www.rmtracking.com, makes a good one. Buy the unit for about 150.00, and 30.00 / yr. for monotoring.
You can put a geo fence around your car and if it moves outside the fence, it lets you know on your cel phone.
I mounted mine under the seat in my roadster.
