Just wanted to let my fellow hambers know.......

Went to T/S to pick up some qts of black enamel, and IH red for another OT project and found it all marked wayyyy down so I bought several gallons of it along with hardner.... I think it was 22/gal

How do you guys pour paint out of gallon cans without wasting it, do those clip on pour spouts work?

I have been thinking about funneling all of my paints into Tide jugs with the spouts and storing them in a drak cabinet. Do you all think they would keep like that???

Interested in why they are phasing out?

A very elderly friend told me 2 months ago, that Rustoleum and compe***or Exorust, will soon only be water based???

I found it hard to believe, until you posted that. I guess I should google the latex possibility?

I think its going to keep better in the original sealed can until you're ready to use it. Be sure to keep it from freezing, mix it real well when you're ready to do something with it.

The local farm store around here had a similar sale last fall, turns out they had to clear the old stock because our state mandated a different formula (maybe your state is following the trend?) for all oil based paint. And no, the new formula is not as good as the old one was, it fades faster and seems like its a softer paint (even with the hardner) then the old stuff was. Gene

So they were just switching brands.

Well, I could use some black for frames, so I will go.

On your pouring; if you have a spare can lid? Just poke one hole on one side and a small vent hole on the other side of the spare lid. Pours easy, no spills. Just put the good lid back on when done.

to make a spout for pouring paint out of a gallon can; use two pieces of duct tape about 8" long each. stick one to the inside lip of the can, put the other piece on the out side lip so the sticky side meet. works perfect.

Up here, tsc doesn't even carry valspar. it's something called "UCP PAINT INC."
Can't find a sheet online for it, so I'll just stay away...

Someone told me that the TSC store can order the paint for customers who pay in advance. Don't know personally. The restoration series paints are popular.

I work for tractor supply and actually part of management, I dont believe were gonna stop selling valspar, not 100 percent positive though. We sell a quite bit of it. But I know were changing up how our paint is set up in the store. the majestic paint is some BS i think won't be here long, its not selling great. Its set on a endcap which end caps our generally sensonal and last 3 monthes or during the dollar day sales blah blah blah. I'll find out more tomorrow. But the clearance paint is currently 26.99 for standard enamel not the restoration series. BUt tomorrow TSC is hosting a sale 10 percent off the marked clearance price. Alteast where I'm at and we all generally do about the same thing. But thats something to look into at your local store.

And yes tractor supply can generally order about anything if whoever ordering it will take the time to do it, anything special ordered is paid for in advance but can be well worth it if you cant find it anywhere

I bought a gallon of M***ey Ferguson red and hardener today at my local TSC, at 25% off, plus another 10% off for clearance. It was around $23 a gallon.

Oil based house paint was phased out here in IL a couple years ago. Farm and Fleet (very similar to a TSC store) still had oil base Valspar tractor paint last I checked. I think I'll stock up as I suspect the feds are putting pressure on the states to phase it out.
As far as the Valspar paint holding up.....the powder coat on the floor of my dump trailer was in bad shape. I used black Valspar enamel with hardener a couple years ago and it's holding up very well.

How long will the paint last if the cans are kept sealed? I was planning to use this to paint my 52 but not for another year.

I have some oil based paint here that was opened, used, and resealed 3 years ago that is still good. I 'm not sure what the shelf life is on an unopened can of paint, but I suspect its pretty long as well as it doesn't freeze. If the paint gets frozen once, its junk. The Valspar tractor paint and the Valspar Anti Rust paint starts to fade out in about a year and a half if its not washed and waxed regularly. I've used this stuff on my rides for many years. Fresh paint that sits in the sun without a couple wax jobs does not match the remaining paint from the same can a year later. (at least for the blue, white, gray, and red primer) The 2nd year it scratches more easily (hardner seems to have little effect), and by the 3rd year it looks pretty faded, scratched, chipped, and dull. I usually repaint on the 3rd or 4th year.
According to the person (a very reliable source) at Farm & Fleet paint department today, by the end of this year, no one will be able to sell the original formula oil based paint. All the oil based paint they have in stock (since 1-1-2012 in IL) is the "new" formula, how its going to hold up will be anyone's guess.

That's depressing news about oil base being outlawed. Good grief, what is in there that is anywhere as nasty as many other things?

Well, I am 60, how much should I hoard of the old stuff?

Its important to point out that the oil based paint is not being outlawed, just the original formula oil base paint. All the "new" oil base paint will be the "new" oil base formula. We just don't know how it will compare to the old stuff. It might be better, but I think we have come to expect it to be worse. At any rate, it will be a touch more expensive, a gallon of the "new" Anti Rust oil base paint is $32.99/gal today. Gene

You wouldn't happen to know if there were other changes within a few years ago? (with Rustoleum)

I had a couple or a few quarts at different times that turned to "gel" if not used up real soon.

I thought that was strange, because usually it would have just formed a skin at the top layer. This did not skin over, it gelled all the way through.

Welp I emailed my district manager before leaving work today (tsc) and he told me that were not gonna carry valspar anymore, which dont make a lot of sense because it was pretty decent paint esp for the money. I can see a lot of disappointed customers coming from this switch over. we're going to that majistic however its spelled. I had a co-worker try it out just to see how well it works and he didnt like it too much. I'd be curious to know wether or not if any of yall have tried it. May brake down and buy some myself just to see.

Is there a big difference in the restoration series vs the regular enamel???
As far as fading and toughness is concerned???

I have sprayed both of them this weekend and I can say that the restoration series lays down nicer with less "orange peel" look, but its not near as thick either just curious about the overall durabilty....

Is the Restoration series an oil based paint? Its another $18 over the Anti Rust series. The label doesn't say anything about being oil based.

I was thinking about trying some of the Restoration stuff, but don't like the few color choices available here. The Blue is darker then I want and there is no white. I can have the Anti Rust made into any color I want (at least you could a couple years ago.) Gene
