Blast from the Past! - "Trade In Your Gas Waster For A 'Next To New' 1940 or '41 Oldsmobile!!" - Oldsmobile Dealers ad from the June 29, 1942 issue of Life magazine. And "All With Tires With Plenty Of Tread!" too! Mart3406 =========================
Sounds like GM wanted to sell off the remaining stock. **** bombed Pearl Harbor and war production probably began right after that....
________________ Probably not 'left over stock' as they were advertised as "next to new, used cars". More likely they were mostly ex-GM 'company cars' previously used by Oldsmobile executives and other staff. Besides new car production already being stopped, I guess the wartime tire rationing must have already started by June of '42 too, hence the reference to all of the cars having "tires still with plenty of tread left". The ad copy reads as if they were part of some sort of "buy back" program. Probably 1 or 2 year old cars that were bought back from recently enlisted servicemen who were still holding loan papers. Maybe they were just allowed to forfeit the cars in lieu of making additional payments. Never heard of such a program before. Wonder if the other manufacturers made a similar offer?
