I am often surprised by the outrage expressed on here about radials, billet, gold chain, and most recently WWW's on late model cars. To me, hot rodding and customizing is simply about modifying stuff to our own tastes, and ideally making it look better to others in the bargain. Sometimes it's cool to borrow something from another (or later) era for our rides. ****an talks about this in his latest TRJ editorial, that lately those of us carrying the "tradition" banner can act as narrow minded as restorers, and get all stupid about period correctness. So I was thinking, I should write something condemning that narrow mindedness and saying the stuff in the first paragraph. But then I recalled my youth, and what I did when I was first involved with cars in the '50s -- and I recalled that a lot of it was ****-talking other people's cars who had done stuff I didn't agree with. So now I realize: all that incorrect/billet/gold-chain/radial whiney ******** is TRADITIONAL!!
You can bet your buns on one thing for sure, most of the whiners and condemners on here either are jealous or are posers with nothing but a moped in the garage. It is neet to be kool in print. And what you stated was exackly correct. So. bashing I guess is traditional, man alotta guys are gonna love that statement.
So,..... being outraged about it is as Traditional as having intolerance toward it ,...... Right?,... (Wait a minute,... I am getting dizzy)
Who gives a ****? I use what I like, which is usually traditional simply because that's what I like. One of the things I REALLY like is a 51 Vicky with a 49/50 front clip, sidetrim and tailights. Your car is yummy. BTW......I also use some non-traditional stuff simply because of the safety factor. One of those things is radial tires on any hotrod/custom of mine that weighs over about 2800 LBS. That includes shuboxes. I know, I know....bias plies are traditional but my 49 coupe drove just terrible with bias ply tires.....replaced 'em with radials and it was like driving a new car...
I simply dislike billet. Call it whatever you want. I really don't care. I use my car every single day and run radials. I've seen a few late model cars that look O.K. with w.w.w. When something looks nasty and someone posts pics of it or is showing it off it's O.K. for someone to think something looks nasty. I think billet for the most part looks bad on a new car. It looks bad no matter where it's at. No, I do not like billet. It's ugly. When I feel like it, I'll say so.
Having one name applied to something as diverse as hotrodding is like a dog chasing it's tail. It is, what it is, and that's a fact. Tradition is a state of mind, and most of us have one.
I am very open-minded in my narrow-mindedness. I don't like orange front turn-signal lenses or street rods.
Computers and communication have been around longer than hot rods... Working model of da Vinci's device
Anyone who talks **** about traditional, and not useing modern stuff, can send me a messenger pidgeon with their complaint. Unless your response comes from a vintage,traditional,70's computer. "Build and let build"
Not true. I think some of you guys need to read the first 2 paragraphs of Ryans new member post again. It pretty much sums up everything.
people shure find stupid things to piss and moan about. the negative energy in this place is amazing some times. i guess its traditional to act like elitist *****s? do your own thing and screw every body elses opinions on it.
If it wasn't a HAMBer I respected I wouldn't post about this. I'm torn on this... Part of me wants to avoid all the 'drama' and I get bored with all the billet/trailer/rat-rod bull ****... But then again, I think if you repsect me enough to give 2 flying ****s what I have to say... Then you deserve the TRUTH... I think too many people build cars to fish for compliments... So when someone they don't know or wouldn't normally give the time of day to, talks ****, they get all paper-skinned and ***** hurt... The CURE for all this **** is to build the car YOU always wanted... When YOU'RE satisfied you don't give a **** about NOISE. That's TRADITIONAL RODDING... People have always talked **** about stuff... Men aren't affected...
People are free to do as they like. Around here we lean towards the term "Traditional"...but that covers a wide range of vehicle styles and at***udes. A very GENEROUS range. This place works and seems to Police itself well. We don't need to accept the obvious $$$$ modern Street Rods with their single purpose of "one-up-manship", or the open driveshaft ****box DEATH mobiles. There are other sites for both...it's not like they have nowhere to go! Why do people keep thinking we need to open our arms and welcome everyone? What would that accomplish? Would the HAMB be improved or something??? I can't see how. First thing you'd need to do is segregate it into separate forums! LOL It ain't broke...no fixing required IMO...
Intolerance=outrage. Both have been around forever. I find them tiresome. Yup. I agree completely. You bet! Today's rant on WWWs just riled me up. Who cares if a guy puts whitewalls on his Isuzu or his PT Cruiser? What authority said that it's a style offense? I agree. "People have always talked ****" was my point. Traditional! Yup. I'm not a fan of $$treet rod$$ or rusty junk, so if they stay away it's fine with me. I do get tired of the radial- and SBC-bashing, or jumping a guy who wants to put a recent engine in his hot rod, or being rude to a newbie who doesn't yet get the purpose of this place. Today's deal about WWWs, as if HAMBers are the style police with sole rights to whitewall tires, was just complete nonsense. But apparently I failed to make my point: I thought it was funny to realize that ****-talking somebody else's car is TRADITIONAL. Th***all.
Traditional hotrodding is taking advantage of all the latest advantages in performance equipment, be it tires, engines, transmissions, rearends, induction, exhaust, suspension, steering, seating, brakes. Each generation of rodders moved on to the next advancement as they could afford it. The cars (23, 38, 40, 53 etc.) souls stayed the same but their brakes, engines, suspensions, and shoes changed with the times. Every hot rod is a traditional one, just a matter of generational bias which decade or style a guy or gal chooses.
Some period perfect traditional cars are quite gold chainer in cost. A steel deuce sporting a healthy smathering of trick of the week parts circa 1950 is not a project for the average income family man. My trad style banger is costing me a ****** fortune. Maybe I should go to the dark side and put a sbc in it. Naa I am way too traditional for that.
I wasn't going to reply but WTF...I simply hate the idea of a "store bought" hot rod. I wasn't taught this **** that way. When I look under a hood and see a logo'd air cleaner and valve covers, you know, Edelbrock, Moroso, Chevy Power, it's simply meaningless. Just like braided hose. For the record though the new cast Edelbrocks are pretty nice. Some builders just don't know. Just don't have vision. Just don't "get it". But the reality is to them it means as much as Ryan's Model A coupe means to him. Have at it. If we all thought and built the same I'd spend more time on my snowmobiles. I don't do Harleys well either. Too ****in trendy. There was a time when it meant something to have one, but now it only means you can afford the payment in most cases. I prefer kustoms myself. Maybe because even though there's a percieved "right way" to do some of the mods in most cases they don't look the same. Tolerance? Easy. Don't look. Do your thing. Do what motivates ya. Ignore the posers. It's easy to respect tradition with newer stuff if you use your head. Anybody wanna slam Rolf's coupe? I wouldn't. It respects tradition rather than mocks it. I can "tolerate" that any time.
HMMMM.... Building a rod..driving a rod..having a rod is sort of like having ***. AS LONG AS I WALK AWAY HAPPY, THAT'S ALL THAT COUNTS!!!
I have found at most shows and rod runs, that the people who talk **** and pick and complain about your car......don't have a car or hot rod of their own..... I sometimes ask them "where's the car your drove here tonight?" and they usually say..."um, I don't have one" Everyone knows who put the time, work, blood, sweat, etc. into their ride and who didn't...... I respect the people who actually build and engineer their rides themselves...
