Ok i want a good clean fight, protect yourself at all times which is more traditional, a 1932 Ford, or a Model A Ford on 32 rails? Ding ding!

 

Strong frame, with a low and narrow body.

I've always been a Model A guy, never jumped on the 32 thing because honestly that's a **** ton of money. Watching TV and the guy had a 30 coupe on 32 rails and made the statement that he believed that combination was more traditional to the hot rod scene than a 32. Figured I'd throw it out here for discussion

 

I say a 1940 Ford or a 1957 Chevy is more traditional

I see what you are saying. I guess it's more of a popularity contest.

 

Back in the day when the Traditional we speak of here it was just options available to those that wanted to go fast...A's, B's and SO many others...yes there were others...

One thing that changed the day was that V8 thing aka 1932...more power to go faster...and as Gary said stronger frame...but some may have seen that as more weight...

I guess when the later 30s rolled around the 32s with the V8s looked somewhat attractive next to a 4 banger A and the price was no doubt similar...so many details effect the evolution...

 

.....I think what Mark is saying is that it's not so much which car it is, but more how it's built.

 

In the earliest days, Ts and As were the race cars. The rest of them were just a bunch of street rods

 

Think about it...obviously there were a lot MORE '32s on 32 rails hot rodded than "A"s on '32 rails. So by shear quan***y, '32s on '32s would be more traditional. Also,'32s on '32 frames have been around longer than "A"s on them, so again, more traditional

 

I’ll take either if they fell in my lap. Not traditional, but I’m a cheap ***ed *******.

 

Cheap ***ed is really Traditional...

 

My dad said the A bodies were lighter than the 32s, which is why they swapped them onto the 32 rails with the V8. I’ll say that’s more of a traditional ‘hot rod’ than a stock 32... and we’re at the end of round 1!

 

32's were hard to find even when they were just used cars. 4 million A's, 250 thousand (or so ) 32's

 

and what else do you do with a 4dr 32

I don't think either one is " more" traditional than the other. I would say that given a choice, the 32 would be more desirable/popular. That's why there are so many 32s being reproduced in various ways.

Traditional = A widely accepted way of doing something in the past.
Traditional hot rod building is a method that was widely used in the relevent era, not a 'pick a car' kind of thing.

 

I like to think of it this way. Back in 1932/33 some guy is perusing his local pick a part and sees a 1932 Ford sitting there all crunched up from being in an accident. It's a 4 door sedan but the body is wasted. Next row over he sees a 1931 Model A sitting there. Coupe/roadster, pick your poison! It too was in an accident. The frame is toast. A giant ***ed light bulb comes on over his head and he thinks, I bet I could put that A body on that 32 ch***is and get the new drivetrain and the V8 motor and have one fast little ****! Bingo! The first hot rod is born! With 32's being priced out of the average mans price range I did the next best thing and did a 31 A roadster. Not quite as expensive but not cheap either now.

 

Gordon seems to have a handle on it, guy's got a Model A and wants to build a hot rod back in the late 40's and that '32 four door in the junk yard fills the bill. HRP

 

I think it was traditional to build whatever you could get your hands on...
