Just wanting feed back about switching to a 5 speed with a traditional hot rod engine (flathead, nailhead, Y block, 6cyl, etc) and ******.
I have a t5 from 1983 camareo/firebird. The unit with the tilted rear mount. Been on the road for about five years.
I love mine. I went from a Studebaker truck 3 spd to a modern 5 spd with OD. It's a hell of a lot more fun to drive and the extra MPGs don't hurt my feelings either.
I had a Camaro V-8 T-5 behind a 302 GMC in a 37 Chevy truck. It was great with a 3.36 rear axle. Some of these have a .63 OD which is too high unless you have 3.70 gears. In my opinion, the S-10 type T-5's with the 3.76 first gear is too low for street use with an engine making any kind of low speed torque.
My Roadster has a Toyota Supra 5 speed in it. Everything else about the car is traditional(39 flathead, banjo rear,39 juice brakes), and for an oft driven car, its the best (and least visible!)upgrade you can make In my opinion.
i have an s10 5speed going behind a 261 chevy and a nv4500 behind my 348. gotta have that od. it makes it real driveable. might not bethe most nostalgia thing but your driving it thats what counts
i put a s10 t5 behind a 235 in my car. all factory parts, a little grind and cut, best thing ever. performance, drivability, mileage, shifter location, all better than stock.
That is a stock Studebaker bellhousing that was available in Studes that used the T-10 4 spd trans in the mid to early 60s. I got lucky and found one. I didn't have to alter my clutch linkage. It was an easy swap. There are adapters for the Stude engine. Root around on the Studebaker Drivers Club site. One of the guys on that site makes them.
Maybe a T5 ain't the way they did it back in the day, but there weren't many freeways where you drove 75 or 80mph for hours at a time, and gas wasn't $4.00 a gallon.
I have a t-5 behind the '57 283 in my truck. 75 mph @ 2200 rpm. It's probably the best decision I made as far as the truck is concerned.
It would be a big help to many if you made the T-5 swap to share how you adapted it and where your source of parts came from and pictures if you have them.
I put a NV3500 behind my stock 250 in my 67 C/10 in place of the old 3 speed. It feels like I added about 75 horsepower. I am now not afraid to try to p*** someone and the OD keeps things nice and happy too. mostly my wallet.
That works too. The engine I might do it too first is the 350 in my 40 Merc but didn't want to use the C word
My hats off to you for managing to mate those two together. Id be interested to see how you did it just for the workmanship factor if nothing else.
I'm putting a T5 behind the 241 Hemi in my '32 Plymouth Model PB roadster... I had intended to stay traditional, but decided for ease of driving on interstates and gas mileage to make this one compromise.
We put an S-10 T-5 behind the 8BA flatty in my wife's little truck (A-frame). Got all the info from Ernie...great info on his tech stuff for T-5s. The T-5 transformed her car into a real road-rocket that cruises easily on the freeway as well as much better gas mileage. The flathead is very happy about it.
its an adaptor sold here in Australia by a guy, there are some 'issues' with the adaptor that mean you have to 'adapt' the adaptor. I have the same set up in my roadster been in the car for about 8 years now I think, I agree with Ben, given that its out of sight, if you want to do miles with a flathead they just love the OD to bring the revs down. Worst part is the box's are getting harder to find and pricey. We didn't get too many T-5 boxes over here so we have to look for alternatives. The Supra box that both Ben and I have is a common swap to put behind SB anything here will handle up to 400hp, is alloy case, so were pretty right with a flathead behind it.
