Thanks, I hope you had a good time at Eagle Field. You've got a bitchin altered. Tell your friends about what we're trying to do.
Actually there is another way to rule out the big dollar guys. Although not normally accepted in drag race circles it has been real sucessful in low buck circle raceing. just throw a claimer motor rule in there and out an acceptable price tag on it. Someone is pissed because daddy warbucks has cubic dollars on the track claim his mill?
The only problem with that is NO amount of money will ever buy the original Hilborn off my motor. It belongs with this car and I'm sure other guys have motors or parts that are part of their cars heritage as well.
Then I suppose they should tune it instead of throwing money at it. On a claimer you don't get the periferals just the long block. The big buck buy me some horse power guys are not running vintage pieces on their cars as a rule. They are calling up insert favorite builder here and saying build me an engine for my blown alcohol gasser. Do whatever it is that you do so that I can be more impressive than anyone else out there. I want a plug and play, I don't want to go home from the track with my hat in hand trying to figure out how to be faster than everyone else. If you make them have to think about loosing their big dollar probuilt engine instead of how to make it run and run well themselves then you have taken a step towards putting an end to cubic dollars winning the race. Like I said I don't believe it has been done in drag race circles but it has been very sucessful in low buck circle track racing.
I'm in Vince. Gary is correct, and maybe Butch could work something out. At least you could get some guys to show up at ANRA and just line up next to one another on qualifications day. Probably only get two runs though. But Butch may do something if enough racers show. Rocky would most likely set up something for Eagle Field. That surface scares me as how my car feels like driving on ice out there. Perhaps I should man up!
Thanks guys. I think this could be a really cool deal for guys how have cars like this. Bottom line we're going to need guys to show up and run. I don't want to have so many rules that we "rule" too many guys out. We just need to keep the deal "Traditional" style gassers. My idea of "Traditional" ; no pro mod style cars or modern AA/GS cars (we all know what I'm talking about) traditional gasser suspension no huge FC type rear tires no delay boxes These are just my ideas not set in stone (woods and cooke).
Here are our rules... so far no one has complained and there is usailly a different winner at every race. Seems to work well for us. <TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=6 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #666666" bgColor=#666666 colSpan=2><TABLE border=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=bottom colSpan=3></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3><!-- google_ad_section_start -->Sunday April 29th (Spring Blast) Saturday May 19th (Detroit Dragway Reunion) Saturday June 30th Saturday July 14th (Michigan Mopar) Saturday August 18th (Saturday Shootout Series) Saturday September 29th (Nostalgia Drags) Great Lakes Gassers Rules 1. I am going to start building a gasser this winter I hope . I am building a 1950 Ford with a 4 speed trans , Ford 429 engine just like you would have found in the 60's & early 70's ! You can contact the East Coast Gassers over here and ask them for some help . They have very simple rules you can find on their web site . Once the word gets out , you will be surprised how many Gassers start showing up to have a good old fashion drag race . You will need to have different classes to make things fair . http://eastcoastgassers.com We see them every year at the HAMB drags in Sept. 29 , 2012 at Beaver Springs in Beaver Co , Pa. The ECG race there a few times a year and a few other tracks as well . Great group of racers and there are some right here on the HAMB ! GOOD LUCK ! Just a thought . Retro Jim
Hey guys I have been in contact with one of the gentleman from this group who lives here in AZ. http://www.nostalgiagassers.com/ They seem interested in getting something going out this way. What do you think?
How about just a show class, there a bunch up here that are cool as hell to look at but all show and no go! they just putt around the car show I think it sad just my take nothing like hanging on on the big end thats the best part of havin a gasser!
The HAMB Drags are held at MoKan Dragway just outside of Joplin MO, in late August. I don't think Ryan has lent the name to the drags at Beaver Springs.
As you said mate we have the Gasser Circus and the Wild Bunch running some nice cars over at Shakey. Just a shame its been raining for 6 months Not quite the same granted
Standard shift transmissions only would be cool, but how many guys even know how to work them anymore? JC
I guess I am a pessimist. The hot rod reunion initially started to bring back the old style of cars and racing. Look what happened. Most of the faster classes are now mega dollar operations. Full NHRA safety rules apply. If you don't care about it being a competitive event, then stick with your limited rules idea.
Your right there !!! Must admit my enthusiasm is waning for our gasser circus mate, it's not what I thought it would be, I appreciate there isn't an abundance of gassers in england and maybe a name change to The Nostalgic Race class would be better ??? I'm a bit miffed that they have set out the rules and people like myself are building cars to them and in the spirit of the gassers and then they allow other types of cars to run. If I may comment, I have a few good friends that run the Gasser Circus over with you in England, one of them in a car that I built. The group is young, and there are indeed "growing pains", but as you well know, they do draw the crowd when they race. I think one issue is the economy. Its hard everywhere to make the trek to run. Sponsorship money from the tracks in nil. I think they just waive fees for entry. Give ' em a chance, and continue your build. They need more cars.. I currently race with Dave Franklins group, American Nostalgia West. Its small, and sometimes, he breaks his own rules to get a good car count. I DO understand why he has to do this, the fact being he books the group, and promises a car count. The numbers sometimes come in under, and he lets others in that may not be let run say at The March Meet or The Reunion. I have a hard time running with this group, although they let me sneak in. My altered wheelbase Comet, The Rocket, has the look of the period, and actually runs a respectable number for its lineage, but I never make the final field. I"m just a number to fill the field mostly, but, once at the PSCA last year, I took the championship much to the dismay of the racers, with the slowest car in the field! The fact that I run with a great group of fellow racers, and the comraderie at the track, in the pits, always outweighs much else in my opinion. I ALWAYS have a blast when I'm racing with guys like me, with cars we love and wrench on. My take, if you don't mind, is to form a "loose" group, simple rules, more purist than anything else. Bracket format. Who cares if a nine second car lines up against a 13 second one in the finals. Its racing in the end.. Just do it to have a good time, don't do it for bragging rights or money???? Start small with a group, build from there. Lemme know how I can be a part of it, if my car fits your idea of the group! Dale
Gasser1961, i'm as close to ANRA as anyone. I was there from day one, and i was instrumental in getting the HA/GR field on the track at Famoso. What you're after is do-able, its just a matter of tactics. i'm gonna send you a PM. gimme a call and i'll let you know what is and isn't reasonable.
Dale, Thanks for your input. We're not looking to draw a crowd or set the world on fire. We just want to find other cars like ours and go race each other. We're not looking to be a booked in class or anything just go out and race the cars. Just have fun.
I talked with alteredpilot today. He seems to think this could be a really good class, that lots of guys would like to run. I'm working on an overview and basic rules for the class to show them. A couple important points first the cars need to past tech. If we keep the cars in the 10's tech is not too demanding. Second we're going to need guys to show up.
Guys come join us for our Third Ever "LEGENDS" Nostalgic Drags and Rod Run which will be held on April 12th and 13th 2013 at the Lone Star Motor Sports Park in Sealy, TX which is located on I-10 five miles west of Sealy we will have a Vintage Engine (VE) calss for motors designed prior to 1954 and I am considering a true Gasser class, it all depends on how many cars we can draw to the event. Most importantly we will only allow 1973 and older cars with no electronics. Go to www.lonestarmotorsportspark.com or www.niftee50ees.com for updates.
