When my brother had his license suspended for racing on the street, he had his girlfriend sit in the drivers seat of his 55 post/365HP 327 and he'd drive from the "date" position. Looked pretty odd.

I wonder if someone added a Bel Air bumper being that it has rubber tits and bumper guards. I am guessing that my 57 sedan delivers just has a plain old bumper, that everyone else would have the same thing.

    Hello,

When we started going to the Lion’s Dragstrip near our house, we saw many things. One was this unusual old frame of a swing set sitting near the Eastside fence of the pits area. At first we all just assumed it was there for a purpose as we had our own chain pulley we set up in our larger two car garage. If there ever was a need, we could just drive home about a mile away and do the work, there. But, we never had to do that exchange.

Now, some folks have the need to get things changed during a long Saturday after the preliminary runs and getting into some necessary changes. They may not live so close to the dragstrip as we did or closer yet to others right on the edge of the farmer’s field in the background of Doug Cook’s 37 Chevy photo. Look at the slight dip in the cross bar… this empty arch swing set has been used plenty of times. Mostly for motor lifting, but we had seen it used to lift the front end or rear to get better access to what was necessary.

For our own set up in the larger two car garage, we had to support the rafter beams with two additional 2x4 laying across, vertically as well as having a 6x6 post that we wedged and bolted to the cross beams for the final security, prior to attaching the chain hoist unit.

The space was on our side of the two car garage. We had to time all of our work during the day as it all had to be taken apart and move aside to allow two cars to park in that space. Especially, our dad, who usually got home around 5 pm. He drove in as if nothing happened, due to the fact that we did all of our usage of the cross beams and chain pulley hoist then took it down so two cars could use the garage.

The old photo of the 2 guys and the supported swing set frame is standard while being the only lift support that was around. As those old backyard swing sets were made of tubular steel, “rust never sleeps” and age is a factor. YRMV

We did see racers using the rusty swing set frame for a variety of reasons. At least, the dragstrip management realized it was a necessary item during the race days and nights.
