I’d like to add a little to this story. The Burkhard Roadster had another name on it early when it ran at the dry lakes and it was Leo Dempsey. Leo worked at Coberly Ford in downtown Los Angeles and was with the team until he married his wife Donna. He went to become a L A city Fireman at one of the smaller stations then moved to the Harbor on the Fire Boats where he remained for the rest of his career. He was a hell of an engine man and could play the best ukulele I ever heard singing “diddies” that make you laugh so hard you had tears in your eyes. Leo was a good friend of Jack Underwood and it was how we met 30 years ago.

Hippo Brammer kept racing for a long time and came back to his roots at El Mirage. I don’t remember how but he aquired the Pete Dean Gas/Fuel roadster, who was also a big guy, and put Sandy Haslem, a pretty big women, in the seat and she drove it many times; they were also married for a time. Sandy and my wife went to high school at South High in Torrance together in the same graduating class.

This world is way smaller than you think!
