I reckon that's Fred Steele's roadster, channelled , 4- 97's, chrome firewall, correct wheel trims and Mass registration and that sure looks like Fred checking out the chick on his car.

I was nearly going to say that in my post 34 GAZ. It was built 16 miles from the Melbourne Post Office but it's now surrounded by houses and any racing there has to shut down at 11.00pm. You're spot on.

The picture of the recruited help, there to get the car that was buried in the sand out, before the high tide came in.

    1959-62 Bobby Langley

    Hello,

My brother and I were wandering all over the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2 in 1960. We had seen the December 1959 Riverside Raceway Drag Meet that was one of the largest gatherings of the top drag racers from the whole USA area in one place. A virtual East vs West drag race. The So Cal drag racers could not wait for the “other” contingent to arrive in So Cal. So, after that 1959 drag race event, the next “big one,” was a few months later in Bakersfield.

It was a fun time, since it took several hours to drive to the dragstrip out in the middle of nowhere, at the time…

Since the whole open area was packed full of drag racer, with a pit pass, I was able to wander around the vast area where the racers were frantically working on their race cars and/or getting them prepped to race. Both sides of the race track were packed with spectators watching some outstanding races. Go to J NAKI You Tube channel to see others that raced at the 2nd annual March Meet. Another who’s who of drag racing in one big show.

Since we had just taken some photos/movies of Bobby Langley at the Riverside Raceway in December of 1959, I battled the folks at the chain link fence in Bakersfield to get some great, as close as possible, action shots of “The Scorpion” FED race car in action. YRMV

Fresh from the December 1959 drag races at the invitational Riverside Raceway, to continue their Westcoast tour, Bobby Langley put on a great show in March of 1960.
