Regarding the photo of the section of pipe at the Hoover Dam site.
Many years ago I read a first hand account of the construction of the
Dam. It was titled " Big Red" which referred to The lead engineer on
the project. The tome was written by a young man who was the engineers
driver and general first assistant. It was a very interesting read and delved
with detail into the myriad tasks involved in the building of this great
monument to American ingenuity and determination. It also exhibited
the total lack of safety and worker protection that was common and
readily accepted in all aspects of industry in the fledging days of the
industrial revolution. I was well into my heavy construction career
at the time I encountered this book. I found it relative to the general
lack of formal safety that was still prevalent in my early days as a structural
Iron Worker. The construction of this dam is accepted as an important
catalyst that spurred the recovery of the American economy from the great
depression. I recommend it as a good read.

 

Those cars are the guys who lashed that pipe section down to the hauler. Making them drive up-hill behind it is the company's insurance policy that they are very careful with their work.
