While executing what appears to be a well-controlled slide into the turn the driver is sporting a leather helmet, goggles (on helmet, not face), dangling cigarette and an absolutely calm and relaxed look on his face; just another day on the job. I love it.

  24. Mr Google says it's Felice Bonetto, looks absolutely fearless.
    Great photo.

I never heard of Chickenman or that promotion but in Southern California we heard the jingle, “Don’t cook tonite, call Chicken Delight” often and saw their delivery vehicles regularly. I don’t recall ever trying their chicken though. We were a Colonel Sanders family.

Chicken Delight was at the end of the HAMB era. Summer of 1963, I drove delivery for the Arlington, MA Chicken Delight franchise. In those days, the franchisee owned the delivery vehicles. We had 2 or 3 year old Rambler Americans, already quite worn out. 3-on-the-tree, I learned how to lift the hood and juggle the shift arms (on the steering column) to clear a jammed transmission.

FUN FACT: We burned off the pin feathers off of each piece of chicken before breading the chicken - Flame was provided by a can of Sterno.

As a kid WLS was my go to station. It was really far reaching. Crystal clear at night in central Wisconsin where I lived. Art Roberts and Dick Biondi were my favorite DJ's . My folks took our family out to Seattle for the Worlds Fair in 1962. Dad had a 53 Buick Special. He towed a 15 foot house trailer. On the return trip we stayed at Makoshika State Park outside of Glendive Montana one night. We pulled in just before dark. The park is on the edge of the Badlands. Our parking spot was rather precarious. It was at the top of a sharp rise. Shortly after getting set-up a fierce thunderstorm moved in. I talked Dad into letting me sleep in the Buick so that I could watch the light show. I found that he had left the keys in the ignition. I tuned into channel 89 (WLS ) . I was astounded to find that it came in very well. The last thing I remembered before falling asleep was listening to an installment of Chicken Man. The next day , Dad couldn't get the car started ! The 6 volt system was drained by the tube type Wonder Bar radio. ( I had fallen asleep with the radio on) Needless to say I was in in the dog house.

Both WCFL (now long gone) and WLS broadcast at 50,000 watts out of Chicago and at night their reception was far reaching.
