That is a great shot of the Dupuy Bros. Modified production 55. I saw it race at
the Laplace Dragway just out side of New Orleans many Sundays. Always a top
runner and contender for the bi-weekly class and competition eliminator titles.
Darr Engine Service still exists and has just very recently moved from New Orleans
to Metairie. The original proprietor retired and passed the business on to one of his long
time employees. In todays crate motor world I find this a bold move. From what I have heard Darr does seem to have a steady industrial motor customer base, along with Hi Po work. I intend to send some motor work
their way. I wish them success.

Jnaki, do you recognize this location? Is it somewhere in the L.A. Harbor area? Looks very familiar for some reason.

  12. Jnaki will probably know exactly, but that's Isky's roadster so I'm guessing So-Cal area.

    Hello,

Thank you guys for thinking about me and So Cal history. Having grown up all over So Cal and staying in the same general area for all of these years gives me an insight for history and memories. But, the location of most old So Cal photos may look similar, since they usually don’t have general information on them.

Several coastal So Cal cities had old lighthouses, but they were not the one in the photo. The location is familiar, Culver City, home to early Isky Cam Company. So, it must be a historic place somewhere in Culver City. The closest place mentioned is Toddle House, an old chain of pancake houses back in those early times.

When my wife and I used to drive around that area that borders West Los Angeles and Culver City near the Helms Bakery Building, we used to see the general area. It was a fun place, we ate late night pancake eggs, and steak snack dinners at the local restaurants, but history passed us to this specific location. We are old, but, not that old… yikes!

Research shows it was on Washington Blvd near the Ballona Creek and La Cienega Blvd. We used to take La Cienega Boulevard as an alternate route to get back to Long Beach/Belmont Shore because the traffic on the freeways was usually crowded. The drive down La Cienega took us past some historic spots and movie set location on the way South. Just before the traffic got worse near the LAX we turned off to go over to La Brea and that led us South to Hawthorne Blvd.

It took longer than a fast freeway road trip, but when the So Cal freeways are jammed, one needs to know which routes take you to the same general location. Plus, it was not a time sensitive drive. It was who we were spending time with, during those side road trips. It was the journey, as well as the final destination…YRMV

I had a hunch that the tall guy with Ed was John Athan and when @jnaki
mentioned Culver City I looked around on the ‘web. The photo was taken near Athan’s Mercury Tool and Die Works that was in Culver City.
