Interesting pictures. It looks like he used quarter elliptic springs on an Olds rear end in the rear of this hot rod. Interesting, especially if he’s working in that kind of a shop. The pictures are dated 1966 and he’s building a flathead when most would be using an Olds, Cad, Chevy. Good start on a cool old hot rod.

    Hello,

In 1959 Spring and Summer, we were at Lion’s Dragstrip almost weekly, either racing or enjoying a nice ear splitting day at the drags. One of the usual suspects was the Dragmaster SBC with the front mount Potvin Style supercharger. They were the originals for this chassis and set up.

My films were silent as could be, since I did not want to carry around a large reel to reel tape recorder back then. So, we were satisfied with the action and not worried about the sound. It was not those digital cameras that have built in mics. Unless someone wanted to spend millions on a Hollywood Pro Movie Camera, it was silent running. (some of those Hollywood 35mm movie cameras were also without sound, too.)

When our teenage friends came over after we got the films developed and I edited them, then we all made the “errrr, rump, rump” sounds to match the staging and full bore runs down the strip. It was hilarious. But we all looked and sounded silly. Of course we called out the names as each guy rolled into the starting line warm ups.

A fun time was had for all of those innocent moments of teenagers acting like little boys making car sounds while watching my films from the last week. They did not complain, either, as my mom usually had the big giant snack spread with her famous cooking items and tons of drinks. We all still had the original images for those hot rods and race cars from the nearby Lion’s Dragstrip in our collective brains.

But, it was just a part of us watching those guys racing at the dragstrip that made us want to get more involved in going faster with our hot rods or a new build or two. There were two hot rods already making some inroads into the Gas Coupe and Sedan classes and two in the stock classes. Now, the scene was set up for more teenage bantering of each other’s builds after those silly sound moments passed with all of us choking with laughter.

After watching those silent films and “the boys” making their noises, the question was always asked, “Why don’t you record some real sounds at the drags…???”

Technology at the time was virtually non existent for an amateur and plus, no one wanted to carry around a reel to reel tape recorder…YRMV So, as much as we tried to coordinate the LP record sounds from the next room stereo record player to the movies, it just was not the same.

But in 2016, I figured out a way to use original drag racing sounds coming from the exact racer at the drags. Dragmaster SBC at Lion’s Dragstrip Summer of 1959… then a recording of the same Dragmaster FED in September 1959 at the Detroit Nationals from my own digital recording off of an LP album.

Now, with the original sounds from the original racers in the same year was as if I had a recorder with me the whole time. I am trying to gather more sounds from other LP albums that have identification labels of the actual racers, not just a high performance motor going down the dragstrip. But, editing them without the announcer's bantering is difficult or real identification is almost non existent. YRMV
