    Hello,

Tommy Ivo, as we all know, was an innovator in drag racing. His builds were top notch and show quality that always made others envious. We certainly liked the quality builds he had in his progression of the race cars he had. For quite some time when we first saw the injected single Buick FED race, it became a favorite of ours and we followed his exploits at the So Cal dragstrips.

The Buick race cars were well built, looked outstanding and were successful in the weekly drag races at the So Cal dragstrips. But, like most hot rod/drag race folks, the need for speed was always playing in the back of the brain… So, the addition of the 671 supercharger and two port top Hilborn Injectors that other racers in the same time period were running, was added.

So Cal drag race reports were ok but not overwhelming, like the injected single Buick did when it first came out to race. That was a very quick competition machine and a few were able to top that injected only, FED. So, the 671/Hilborn Injection was supposed to be “it…” As nice as it was, it just did not have the results of the injected FED appearance and competitive wins in 1958-59.

So, within months, this was showing up and now, making everyone take a step back.

1959 Riverside Raceway twin injected Buicks

Yes, there were variations tried with a single supercharged motor on one side, but the top running combo of two injected Buick motors was the record setting race car.

NOTE: When that 1959 meet was over and the new year settled in, Tommy Ivo started setting top speed and low e.t. records at various So Cal dragstrips. He topped it off at the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2. Where he did an unusual thing…

He was the “First” to break the 9’s with an 8.95 and 8.98 E.T. :

Then, a friend sent me an actual sound recording of the Tommy Ivo Twin, without any announcer’s background babble and it fit the 1960 Lion’s Dragstrip single run on film. Now, we can all hear what the twin Buick FED sounded like in 1960… hot and cool at the same time, and very fast.

  21. When I moved to San Francisco in July 1956 at 15 years old, I saw a coupe just like this one. That really got my heart going. I was in the land of Kustoms and hot rods.
