    Hello,

This is such a beautiful dragster that it is too bad that no matter what photo programs are/were used, those blips cannot be removed.

But we captured the color action at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1960.

Here is another photo of the beautiful FED race car called “The Californian” by Manuel Gonzalez.

From my research files, a nice article from Hot Rod Magazine:

    Note:
Around 12 years old, my friend and I were moving on to the Boy Scout level from our involvement in our Cub Scout Pack activities. One of the ways was to earn merit badges. The ones we tried to get first were the walking for 5 miles and get it certified. So, off we went. We learned by our paper maps that 5 miles in the country or mountains is obviously different than the city. But as a city kid, it was 5 miles.

So, we selected various 3-5 mile one way locations around our house. But, the selection was always different if we could not find a place that would give us a verified signature and date.

    The Pike 3 miles
    Lion’s Dragstrip 3 miles
    Long Beach harbor 3+ miles
    Bixby Knolls 6 miles
    Long Beach airport 8 miles

We could have gone to many different places, but decided to stay within our back yard neighborhood, Wilmington, CA. We had been on this road plenty of times, there were empty spaces, industrial buildings, shops and great places to stop and eat something , if necessary prior to getting to the park. Plus, we had to get the “park person” to verify our arrival with a signature and date.

We got a certificate for walking 5 miles with certified results. It led up to a Boy Scout, Continuous Walking Merit Badge. Since the museum is just 3+ miles away from our house in the Westside of Long Beach, it was 5 + 1 for the resulting walking trip.

The scariest thing was not the amount of diesel trucks rolling by at their normal obnoxious speeds, crossing two major intersections coming from the nearby harbor, two bridges, or an elevated roadway, but having to walk by the neighborhood, “alphabet streets,” once we got into the residential areas surrounding the huge park and Banning Museum.
