You're hitting a spot that's close to my heart as i am a musician,my father is a retired musician , my grandfather played in a swing / big band, and my entire family have been avid record collector's for decades. As most know i organize and promote musical events throughout the west coast , i DeeJay all over as well, and its all 100% roots American music that i deal with. First off i don't know how you can enquire about "Traditional" music and then say "not Rockabilly". Unless you're talking about the Reverend Horton Heat, Mike Ness,Supersuckers,or some other watered down punk/pop band, real Rockabilly would be part of what you're enquiring about.

As i mentioned before roots American music is what i would prefer to call it, and it would consist of genre's like Delta Blues, Chicago blues, Swing, Western Swing, Hillbilly,Country western, Hot Jazz,Bebop, Rhythm & Blues,Doo Wop, RocknRoll, Instrumental, Surf, Mountain Music, Bluegrass, and of course Rockabilly - just to name a few.

Where did all this stuff start? Johhny Otis still teaches the history of music in northern California and in his opinion a lot of it goes all the way back to the drums of Africa.
in addition to that others have said the Mountain music - turned to Hillbilly - turned to Blue grass -turned to Country originates back to Scottish/Irish settlers.

Sam Phillips once said "You take a black left hand......and a white right hand......and whattaya got........son,....you got RocknRoll !

If someone ever had records from Bill Monroe and my main man Robert Johnson.....thats where i think all this stuff started.

Rock On brothers......in your house, garage, car,I Pods, back yards, front yards, car shows, bars, and rockin gigs all over the globe !

    Don't forget Warren Smith!
For those Roy Orbison Rock'n'Roll fans, seek out Mean Little Momma (Sun, this period). This track was recorded in his early days with the Teen Kings and is one of the rockin'est cuts of all time in my oppinion. This is a song to drive your Hot Rod/Kustom to!

Yeah that came out wrong,I just meant that calling oneself a 'rockabilly' is a relatively recent thing, and by relatively recent I mean people,at least over here in the UK,began to use it as a description of a 'lifestyle' back in the late 70's.Previous to that I think It referred mostly to one style of mainly 50's music revered by the then Rockers,Teds & Hepcats who dug 'traditional' Rock'n'Roll.Just my experience of it back when I first got turned on to it as a teenager in the 70's.I'm just glad that we have a sensible discussion on here that looks like it might help correct the impression that Rockabilly should be seen as a dirty word.
And if you haven't heard Orbison's 'Mean Little Mama' you really are missing out:D

Look for Brian Setzer's remake of "Peroxide blonde in a hopped up model ford" If this don't get ya in the mood to, slick yer hair back and drive fast nothing will. Youtube has the song by "Ignition" but it ain't that great.

  18. Axle, sounds like we dif the same kinda Rockabilly at least......

Hey you guys forgot Eddie Cochran - imo the most under estimated singer/songwriter in the 50s/very early 60s. He was one kat that had it all - brilliantly talented, could write and perform.

Died WAYYY too young such a shame /waste!!

    Long live Eddie !!

Alright, somebody remembered Hound Dog Taylor !

Don't forget to add the following to the list...

    R.L. Burnside

    Mississippi Fred McDowell

    Big Joe Williams

    Lightning Hopkins

    Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Glad Eddie Cochran made the list.
But I guess its up to me to mention the unavoidable CHUCK BERRY who leads to T-Bone Walker ....

... might as well stop right here before I spend the rest of the day listing my favorite musicians of the more recent 'traditional' musical era on a hot rod forum.

Don't know, but I've always have been mostly inspired by honest and pure musicians that also had genuine talent and an endless free spirit.

I can never forget these guys recordings, which got me through my early 20s.
Interestingly it was Captain Beefhart and his Magic Band, who really turned me on to the Blues.
My all time most favorite creative electric band.

That song is on Brian Setzer's "Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1, A Tribute to Sun Records." It contains 23 songs, all originally recorded at Sun Records in the mid to late 50's. I know it's a "new" recording, but it's well worth a listen. You'll be hooked!

my earlier post in this thread focused on the on-topic subject of traditional music artists, but i'm with you on this point. any music that feels non-formulaic, genuine and sincere is the most important factor.

as far as non-traditional goes, the good Captain is one of my all-time faves of deconstructionist rock; with Pere Ubu , The Fall, Chrome, Can, early Devo and old Talking Heads, not far behind.

Man, I love Screamin Jay, but don't know that I'd put his music on my list of top tunes to drive to.
Now "the unavoidable" Chuck Berry on the other hand...
