Did the magazine ever finish that series on building an Olds Rocket Mtr? I have the one where the engine was getting machined, but probably missed some issues at the book store before I subscribed. If they did finish the series could someone let me know which issues & are they available. Thanks
how does subscribing to an ezine work? they give you access to their site? what if the site isn't there 20 years from now? or, do they email you a copy with no link.......that way it's actually on your PC and you can bring it up many moons from now....
I dont think they ever finished it. I dont know why, It would have been cool to see it finished. Jimmy White
Sorry, my R&C mags aren't going ANYWHERE.. I have most of them from back in the Tom Medley days, until the present... and it fits my personal tastes a helluiva lot better than anything else out there right now. JMHO.
Correct- Rizzo & Dan Kahn were working on that and somehow it stalled out at the machine shop and they wouldn't let go of it. Weird deal.
I knew it was something with Dan Kahn, But i didnt know the specifics, and I didnt want to be a gossiper. Maybe we can rescue it from the machine shop?? JImmy White
finding a magazine that fits most of us here i almost impossible. i grew up in the time when a magazine would write an article that would send you on your way to the junkyard to look for parts. that will not happen anymore they have articles that use there advertisers 2800.00 front ends 2000.00 rear axles 7500.00 and up crate motors. the best magazine ever was the early tex smiths hot rod mechanix before he was bought out by pisano publishing. he would have articles on how to install a junkyard volare front clip or other junkyard stuff like most of us can afford and do. but i do not think today that a magazine could exsist without all the big boy advertising. back in the day i would read any article by tom senter mark dees or pat ganahl 2 of the 3 are no longer with us . maybe we should get the last guy to do some writing that most of us guys would follow thanks mike
My thoughts, Consistently great Rodder's Journal Hop Up Hop Up Special (first issue just came out) Rolls and Pleats next tier of magazines Mag-Neto (haven't read it much but what I've seen is good, could easily move up) Wizzz Traditional Rod and Kulture Rod and Custom
Lets face it all of these hot rodder mags will go into a declaine in the next decades as there will be no one around to read them that cares.- Go ahead and get an early start now! Which way do you turn a wrench?- Righty tighty. Can you paint?- Yes, and I shake the can all by myself. Can you dismantle and rebuild an engine?- Yes. What does your pile of sh*t look like?- Keep up, they have all been posted on here before. I will bet you bought it finished anyway.- Umm, No. '56 Chevy bought neglected- gave it some love and someone had to buy it. '29 Sedan bought as a stocker in process of becoming a hot rod. '31 Roadster pickup built from scratch- drove it today. It was ripped off under another subject title by your buddy Chilli Phil.- Buddy? He was ripping me a new one only a couple posts before this one. Why dont you spend some time making that rag better instead of wasting your time on here?- Good idea. What should you be doing instead of giving free critiques? You are probably free lance anyway.- No.
I quote: "It was ripped off under another subject title by your buddy Chilli Phil.- Buddy? He was ripping me a new one only a couple posts before this one." Ha ha ha, HEY Jim, these newbies are forcing you and me on to the same side in these conversations. Stay calm and don't let these guys give you stomache acid as you are NOW invited for a bowl of my infamous Hydrazine Flash at the March Meet next year. Ha ha ha. IF you dare!! HEY, Bustin' gear, you need to change your name to the Peacemaker. Ha ha hah! Ol' Rodney King was right, we CAN all get along. chili, Jim A's new buddy. 8-O
Newbie? Last time I checked 2002 came before 2004. Check your member date. I guess I could expect him to be defensive. It is his bread basket... maybe if you west coast guys would get up in time to work along with the rest of us the world would be a better place. What year is CA supposed to detach anyway? Nuff said!
After all this friendly banter I thought I'd just see what some of the fuss is about, and I have to agree with some of the criticisms regarding the level of advertising. Here in New Zealand the US mags typically run from $12.95 to $17.95, while TRJ is around $30. I checked back through some recent ones, and R&C, Street Rodder and some others do indeed have huge levels of advertising. It would seem that the USA is totally overrun with companies trying to sell Mustang II front ends and ready for paint 32 bodies. All for exorbitant prices, of course. While some mags like OSR get panned by folk here, at least they hold the advertising levels to a reasonable quantity. Here in NZ, we have a great little mag called NZ Hot rod. This sells for $6.95 and has less than half the advertising of R&C. Now even allowing for transportation to NZ, there seems to be quite an anomaly here. Also, based on our population of 4 million, compared to the US of what, 200 million?, makes the anomaly seem even bigger. Draw your own conclusions.
OOoops! I am a Teamster and as such have mucho respect for seniority. I bow to your years of experience. I like the world as is, but I'll try to rise earlier to keep up. I get up at 4am now, what time should I rise to keep up? Californians have ALWAY seemed somewhat detached to me anyhow. What year would you prefer? As we Californians are wont to say, Have a NICE DAY! chili, chastised and humble now.
well, i like garage, rolls and pleats, and something "Illustrated" (some rag i forgot the name, but it is made up of the crew from the old CKD) Club International does good reviews of vintage rides too. if you are into vintage speed (4 banger) S.O.S.S: secrets of speed society is the way to go. and for the mainstream rags I like HotRod and CarCraft, and anything else Freiburger edits.
I read R & C, Street Rodder (longtime reader of both) Hot Rod and Car Craft. Occasionally I'll pick up TRJ, Hop Up. I read OSR for awhile, but got tired of the tattoos... Tattoos are fine, but if I wanted to read about Tattoos, I'd buy their rag. It seems that this magazine is quite shallow. Car Craft doesn't really fit this board... Hot Rod has come a long way in the past year with some articles that stay on topic of this board. EX the article with the 56 wagon, stude and 33? from last summer... Street Rodder is way aluminized (tm) and I basicly read it because my wife bought me a 10 year subscription and it makes it easier to poop. plus, if I ever run out of paper, the glossy print of the adds don't leave as many paper cuts. R & C is my favorite... It does have good and better months, but there is always at least one feature car or article I really dig. Attn Jim A...One thing I would like to see is a garage tour of the home builders as well as the pros.... You could probably spend an entire issue on Plowboy's stuff... I would like to see what some of the guys use to build there stuff, whether it be a sawzall and 4" angle grinder under a carport or a 10,000 sf facility... I'd also love for a magazine to re-visit Jack Walker's collection as American Rodder did a few years ago.... I am sure a few things were missed... My thoughts... Andy
I agree with Hillbilly Hotrodder, I always get a laugh from Burger, plus I have enjoyed Rolls & Pleats, Magneto, Rev, Wrench and usually our "domestic" Australian Street Rodding. I probably find more of interest in R&C than Street Rodder, and American Rodder seems to have lost the plot. Michael
It's just a "one-off," but DEFINITELY pick up a copy of Frieburger's special edition of Hot Rod magazine that's on the stands right now. It's bursting at the seams with some great old dragster images that you'll never see anywhere else. He started a post on here about it and it's worth doing a search for it on the board. And after you buy it, drop him a line and tell him what you think of it. Telling your friendly, neighborhood magazine editors what you like and don't like really does get some attention. I think he's doing some great work over at Hot Rod and I just wish he could do both that AND Car Craft... STONER
Nailhead, You can get just about all of these magazines at www.thehotrodcompany.com and they're H.A,M.B. friendy too.
Nuff said? Is that what you call the things you've been "saying"? Guess I don't speak Nuff too well, cuz I don't understand a word. Why is your ear busting, anyway? I don't understand that, either.
