Yeah, I don’t see as many of them on tri5’s as I did back in the 90’s. Of course I guess the trade off is big billet wheels or at least that seems to be the style most guys are going for.

The best way to find out what people were really doing back in a certain time period is to get out a stack of car magazines from the period and look. I agree with @Mr48chev that almost no one ran blackwalls in the 50's

  3. This is a photo from 1957 of a 56 with a custom paint job my friend's dad did, so practically a brand new car at the time, more custom than hot rod but a legit 50's photo.

  4. I personally like it with the black rims on the back, makes it look tough, ready for action !

Swade41, the someday plan is for 15x6 either chrome or black reversed steel wheels with factory 210 caps but it is pretty low on the list.

upload_2022-7-3_4-35-15.png From the stock appearing mild custom with various speed parts attached to the more modified custom look were the main draws or goodies for the average teenager from 1959 well into the mid 60s. Both are considered the early 60's look... @firemangordy has one great looking combo...

    Hello,

In our neck of So Cal, the look for most 55 Chevy sedans was to leave it relatively stock overall, with some custom upholstery and paint. Add in chrome reversed wheels and the look was it. Some guys modified the motor until they needed a larger 283 bored over to 301. That in a 55 Chevy, was just right for daily driving and the sometimes street performance events.

But, as the drag racing scene started going a little off center with the rules, so did the street versions of the Gas Coupes and Sedans. Now, some were so modified that they technically were not daily driver street legal hot rods and sedans. Then as the locals saw some Gas Coupe class sedans raise the front when they accelerated, the look was copied for the street. in looks only, not real horsepower. Raised front ends and no bumper were illegal, but they were fix it tickets that led to the next reversal look again.

So, where ever you were in So Cal, they had their own choices. But, the general look tried to follow the street legal Gas Coupes and Sedans from the dragstrips. That is where most wanted to take their hot street cars and compete against others. Stock tires became small tires in front and larger tires or cheater slicks with wheel radius cuts in the rear, if they did not fit underneath.

There were some full-on race prepped cars enjoying their short drives around the cruising grounds from drive-in to drive in restaurants. But those were not the common thing. Those were the actual real sleepers on the street. The internals were powerful and externally, looks could be deceiving.

But, some just did not go to the drags, copying the acceleration look by raising the front end and doing the fake racer look. YRMV

No one in particular, but just a fad of the times. (Despite the addition of American Racing Equipment 5 Spokes for the drag racer look.)
