I would like to put a hitch on my car for pulling a camping trailer. At one time there was one that bolted to the bumper and had a bar that connected to the frame for support. Designs have changed over the years and the only ones I find now are the receiver hitch type that has a square bar that bolts to the frame. I could use this type but it would require a lot of fabrication. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks
I have an old aftermarket one for my '53 wagon. It's labeled 53 chevy wagon on it and bolts to to the back of two bumper bolts and has a bar that attaches to the rear frame crossmember. It would be easy to fabricate one similar. I'm at my inlaws in Seattle, but I'll be home tomorrow and try to remember to snap a picture of it.
A buddy gave me a receiver hitch that he said came off of some mini van That I used on my 50 sedan delivery. It has the 1-1/4" receiver. Its 3 pieces and the end pieces telescope into the center piece. It took very little fabrication to make it work and it bolts onto the inside of the frame using the bolts that hold the bumper on.
I had thought about using a receiver hitch style but there is a frame crossmember right where it would bolt in. The car has duel exhaust so there is not a lot of room there. It may be easier to fab one but I would hate to drop my trailer on the highway.....LOL
my 53 wagon has a simular hitch as wayfarer has. it bolts to the bumper brackets and the old farmer that had my car added a few braces to the frame and even a few safety chains to the frame , hell of a build. if it wasn't so damn cold out and wet i''d go take a pic but i'm nice and warm in the house right now. sorry
No problem this is a long term project for me so a few days wait is no big deal. I have had this car since I was 16 and it has gone though a few rebuilds. This latest one is the best yet. A ls2 truck engine and tranny with almost 0 miles, fat man suspension, air bags, the works. I am currently cleaning the tar from the floors repainting with primer and putting down sound deadening material. It will be nice when done and I am going to drive the wheels off of it..... http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh26/frigephoto/53engine.jpg
If you measure the width of frame and check with a good junk yard or trailer rentral you could probaile find a reasonable price one. Years ago when we did a lit of used car work i found one that was a perfect fit for my 36 ford .
good luck scraping the tar, i did my 53 sedan inside and out what a job. also be careful i think some of it has asbestos especially on the quarterpanel inside. scrape some careful you'l see the fibers and it's realy tough to get off.
