Tranny cooler for engine

My 322 nailhead originally came with a Dyna-Flow trans. I'm running a T5 now but there are connections on the water pump for coolant hoses that once ran to the Dyna-Flow. They're capped off now. I'm thinking about getting a transmission cooler and connecting it to those unused water pump connections to try to get some additional engine cooling. Will it make much difference? Any recommendations on a type of cooler?

dont know, but it sounds good------might have to run a low pressure rad cap

  3. Do you need additional cooling? Why add something that you don't need?

Yeah. It does get hot in stop and go traffic on a hot day.

  5. What type of radiator and fans do you have,,I can't see additional hoses helping much. HRP

It's the stock model A radiator and a flex fan. I wouldn't have just hoses. I'd put a trans cooler under the car and plumb the engine coolant into it.

  7. Flexible fans are notorious for their lack of air movement.

If you want to add hoses and a transmission cooler that's fine but moving air through the radiator is going to do a much better job.

I use the biggest steel bladed fan I can use, because of the fixed position of the blades they pull a lot of air through the radiator. HRP

Stock Model A radiator? Your talking about a part thats over 80 years old. Did you have the radiator serviced and have the tubes rodded (cleaned)? My '29 radiator had about 50% clogged tubes. The shop I sent my radiator to saved the silt he removed and it filled a coffee can. Are you using a fan shroud? The shroud makes a huge difference. With a good rad and shroud it should run fine.

I did have the radiator serviced. I'm building a shroud right now.

You'd be better off using heater cores as additional cooling. They're designed for the purpose and have larger inlets of the heater hose size. I bought two brand new heater cores off Fleabay and made up a channel framework to hold them side by side. Then mounted them horizontally under my radiator and plumbed them into my unused heater lines. They are from a late 70's Fairmont and are pretty large. I gave $5 ea., plus shipping for the two NOS cores, and they dropped my engine temps around 10-15 degrees.

  11. Actually you would be better off using it as an oil cooler, keep your oil cool and it will lower your water temp. As well as keep your oil from breaking down as quickly.

Spring for a new Walker and a good OEM fan blade. Use a shroud and you should not have any problems running hot. Use the correct radiator cap too! Good luck! Bob
