'77 C4... would having too much fluid in it make it start to slip when hot?

  2. Not that I know of..., sounds like you've got other problems...!!! Possibly the Sprag...!

stupid question, are you using the right fluid? I had problems with my C4 running 'universal' fluid in it, drained and refilled with type F and it works fine. Just a thought.

Over filling a trans would probably make it foam out of the dip stick tube first. Then it would slip. I had a TH350 that was over full and it did all kind of weird ****.

If I were in your shoes I would...

Sorry, went into a little Animal House tangent... :D

I would suggest that you drain the trans and refill to the appropriate level with the correct fluid type. Oh, change the filter while you are at it. I know it ****s to do but it will tell you a bunch about the actuall condition of the trans.

Trans fluid has a tendency to break down over time. It turns to something like shalack (sp?) It gets very slippery and creates a film between parts. It sounds stupid but old and broken down trans fluid actually allows things to not have enough friction. Hence a possible reason for your slippage.

The fluid and filter was put in sometime around August or Sept, (8 or 9 months ago) and has mainly been just sitting, until I started driving it around. 3 Times out so far. First time I didn't notice it slipping, but it was the first time I had driven it ever. Didn't notice it the second time either. Third trip was pretty bad. That's when I thought it was low, so I dumped 2 quarts in it and it was ok, but after 15 miles it started slipping again.

So before I do anything crazy, I should drain and refill then?

Flatdog is right, I bet the press relief valve & spring is either missing or installed wrong. Valve goes into valve body first then the spring against filter. DAVE BTW, how you doing Flatdog? Havent talked to you in ages. DAVE

Do you know of any online diagrams that I can look to familiarize myself with the system before I tear into this pressure valve? Should I buy a new one at Napa just to be safe?

Oh, and how many quarts on a C4?

Want me to send you a diagram & valve ***y? Its really a no brainer. Theres a little tab on the filter & the valve ***y goes right above it. VERY common mistake. If you want call me on my toll free# (877) 737-4438 DAVE

I decided **** it and put it all back together and test drive since I would have to anyway to get it to Kevin's to yank the ******. I drove around for over an hour and it was a blast. The only time it slips is going into D if you are not hard into the gas, such as in city traffic. I did some hard launches onto the highway, and it was great.

So it probably does need rebuilt maybe. Seems like it will be ok for awhile. Maybe the torque converter is for too heavy a vehicle (F150 donor motor) and the coupe is waaaay lighter. Or is that a dumb theory?
