I have a 1963 SS Impala with a 283 v8. i do not like the original tranny, so i was thinking of buying a another one. A buddy mention he has a tranny from a 1974 monte carlo. We measured it and it is the same length as the impalas tranny. What will it take to completely do a tranny swap of this sort? id appreciate the help.
a man the olny i can think u will need is a crossmember for the tranny but if only if it dont bolt up the same if the tranny mounts in your car is a powerslide you ll need a new kickdown also what kinda tranny do u have and what areu putting in let us no we can give u a little more help that way and also maybe a shifter but need to no what the two trannys are kyle
the original is a powerglide and the 1974 tranny is a turbo 350. i wanna put the 1974 tranny in the 1963 Impala and get rid of the Powerglide.

done it in my girls '61 bel air, will bolt right in (block, crossmember and yoke). you need to take ALL the stuff from the monte carlo, kick down cable dipstick tube (notch the firewall pinch weld a little), trans mount. you will need to modify the original shift arm and bracket to work on the th350, also you need to grind shift arm (above) to get into low (and have the indicator right). MAKE SURE the yoke on the driveshaft has a closed end (NO hole by the u joint) or the trans fluid will leak out. you will also have to rework the cooler lines.
