I'm building a model a sedan on a custom 2x4. 1/8 frame motor is in I'm building a crossmember now I wanted to build one like the guys run in 32 fords x type but I'm tight on room any thoughts on just running a straight tube type crossmember bolt it of course
I run the tube type all the time. Here is one I have put in from summit a few times, they offer different bends, some straight across some with "drops" Cheap as well http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-4539/overview/
The x members are usually more for aesthetic and can help if running early brake pedals. It would be suggested if using unboxed rails but in your case especially when space is an issue for exhaust and other components a tube crossmember is the way to go. Now the other thing is are you running parallel leafs or transverse leaf spring. If Transverse you need some sort of locating device like ladder bars. You can buy a trans crossmember like the one from socal that has mounts for a rear ladder bar setup. Just something else to think about.
I'm running a triangulated 4 link and either coil overs or air bags I ended up buikding a nice tube. K member for extra strength
A 2x4 RHS member with drop down transmission mount is the norm down here. No torsional flex in frame and solid. Your body won't twist and rattle as much and the car is much nicer to drive.
