According to reports NASCAR teams determined the same thing about painting engines, flat black best.

  2. There can be problems with the salamander (Mexico term) too. Don't even ask. LOL

If it were me my friend I would run the radiator cooler and add on an inline cooler like this AFCO unit under the car. I have had good luck doing this.

  3. It was interesting that when I did a 351W swap into a '56 Ford I used to own, the stock temp gauge showed the motor as running hot. Gauge movement put the needle right at the top of the 'normal' range, with not much range above it; less than I felt comfortable about if it actually did overheat. It wasn't, actual temp was right about 190 as per the original 351 t-stat. I had to put in a 160 stat to get the gauge to read the same as it did with the 292.

I'm guessing there's a whole bunch of variables not considered when making a blanket statement like that. But then again, I really dislike blanket statements

I'm retired now, but I was self employed, couldn't call in sick.. The last 18 years, my work space was my garage, 10' off the back door of the house. The only time I drive is when I have to go someplace to get something.

The thermostat in the truck is a 190 degree unit. When its below 15 degrees, I suspect it takes about a minute to open the stat at just above an idle (highway speeds heats up faster). I'm 3 blocks from the edge of town, that includes backing out of my driveway, a left turn, a small hill, a stop sign, a right turn, a traffic light, another right turn, and speed up to 55mph. If I start the truck, pull it into gear, and drive straight out of town, its pretty close to a 3/4 mile out of town (at 55 mph) before the truck shifts into OD. If instead of that last right turn I to go straight, or make a left turn, I stay in town @ 30mph, so no OD. The next traffic light in either of those other directions is 6-8 blocks away. by those traffic lights, everything is much happier. I usually avoid the issue by starting the truck, putting it in neutral for 30 seconds at a slightly higher throttle speed, before putting it in drive to go.

Then my wife wouldn't drive it, and that would cause more problems then a flaky trans when its cold outside. Gene

Yes I am aware of that. The original 56 actually had a 170 degrees stat when new in California. I’ve just added A/C and will be watching closely to see what happens. Mine was an overheater and could not sit at a long signal summer or winter without the needle heading toward the H. A fellow with a T-bird told me the fix after I had 1. added a shroud. 2. Restricted the bypass. 3. Sealed the area over the radiator to the hood (stock Ford part). 4. 6 blade fan. The fix was actually easy... speed up the water pump at idle (1-1/2” smaller pulley) problem solved. So now I added the A/C to make the wife happier, me too. No water was moving at idle and now it is...
I’ll be trying a 180 degree soon as the engine barely changes idle when I put the unit on.

  7. I know we're getting off the original topic of trans cooler, but I'm reading this latest stuff with interest. I installed power steering on my 47 in 2019. To do so, I scrounged up set of pulleys from an early 70's 351W with AC and PS. Once I got it running, it seemed to me that the engine was running hotter. Think the water pump pulley is larger now, actually crank pulley is different diameter too. Will have to check and see if I kept my notes.
