any 700R4 would work 91 and down. but the best would be 84 or 85 car or truck. I have a 700R4 with my big block on the hwy it runs about 2000-2500 rpm. let me know if you need more info.
probably any 700 would hold up to it. make sure to get one from either a 4.3 V6 or a V8 donor. later the better, up to 91, although later ones have electronic speedo instead of gears. So aim for mid 80s. And set up the throttle cable properly, or you could fry the trans pretty quick.
The parts man at local chevy dealership told me that chevy put the 700r4 behind inline 6 engines for the last 2 or 3 years that chevy offered in inline engine in pickups . if you could find one of these in a salvage yard and grab the tv cable bracket off of the intake manifold you could make it work with little problem. Also , you may want to use the TCI Constant Preasure Valve Body in your 700r4 , this will let you play with the adjustments on the tv cable and not worry about burning it up !
Since you are running a 6 cyl you might consider a 200R4 which would give you more clearance in your '54 than the 700R4.Either way your donor core should be a 87-91,GM overdrives prior to '87 had lube issues that caused a mulititude of weaknesses in these transmissions, the 200R4's from these years of Monte Carlos are some of the prefered cores and usually readily available.
