I'm sure this is blasphemy to ask but is there an easy way to swap out a dynaflow to a standard trans on a '54 buick special basketcase? I'm trying to find a guide as to what would be compatible. I want to keep the nailhead but I think the trans is trash.
It's a pain in the ass... You're limited to three transmissions if you don't want to completely replace the entire rear suspension (which includes fabricating mounting points for control arms or leaf springs, etc.): Dynaflow. 3spd from a '54-'55 Speicial: 5-bolt cover, gears made of glass. 3spd from a '56 Special or '54-'56 Century: 6-bolt cover, stronger gears, good trans. But very hard to find. PM Buickfarmer--he's usually got one, or a lead on one. -Brad
If you go w/a Dynaflow; get one from a 56 Buick. There's a code list that'll allow you to ensure a removed slushbox is from 56. Why, it's the best version of the 53-56 models.
