I need a new transmission for my Y-Block. Its a '56 272 from a truck. I need a DEFINITE list or something of transmissions that will FOR SURE mount to my bellhousing. Ive heard T-5s fit perfect, other people say I need an adapter kit/plate or something for them. Same story with T10s. I need help really bad. I need to finish my car soon. Thanks everyone -Charlie
A definte answer is a T5 may fit, or a T10 may fit. Or they may not. T5s and T10s had way to many applications to say any of them will fit. A T10 from a 62 to 64 Ford should fit. A T19 from a 61 to 65 Studebaker may fit. A T10 from a 57 to 64 chevy won't fit. Same deal with a T5.
Ok I got you. The T5 Ive got lined up is from a mid '80s S-10. Anybody else have something to offer? Im still learning alot when it comes to transmissions.
I run a T-5 in mine but you do have to make a few mods. The T-10 will bolt right up to a three speed bell. If you go with the T-5 you don't want the S10 ****** get a Mustang or Thunderbird with the ten spline input shaft. Some guys also use the S-10 ****** for the tail housing to relocate the shifter, I just used the T-bird ****** and made a few bends to an old shifter.
I dont want the S10 by preference or the fact that I absolutely cannot run it because of the spline count?
If upgrading I would go with a T-5, for advantage of having the overdrive. Definately might fit? Biggest problem getting it to fit is to fit your mind to the fact that all the little problems are solvable. No, it won't simply bolt in and be ready to go without some tweaking If the input shaft is too long, have it cut off. No problem crossing over different size pilot bearing/bushing. Spline count? No problem finding a clutch plate with spline that match the input shaft on ANY donor ******. No problem adapting to crossmember if housing is different length. No problem sending driveshaft to have length adjusted, etc.
The Mustang/T-Bird ****** will have close to the prober bolt patern for a Y bellhousing. You can do as I did and cut the center hole to 4.905" (a machine shop can bore it for you), then drill and tap new top bolt holes. The two bottom holes line up the way they are. As I said be for you can use the S-10 ****** for parts if you want to change the shifter location. the turbo T-Bird 4 cylinder trans is cheap and easy to find, most guys wont run these because of the 240 ft lb torque rating but I have one in my truck and it holds up to the abuse, if it breaks I can replace it for $100-$150. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28gtzOJdHqg&feature=channel_page
Good points, you will have to cut off about 1/2" of the input shaft and bore the old br*** pilot bushing to take a roller bearing from the Mustang/T-Bird.
Definite: The T10 4 speed from a 62-early 64 Ford will bolt up.But there are different tailshaft lengths.
The dia. of the tip of the input shaft is a differant size that is why you need to use the roller that would go in the Mustang/T-Bird.
